    Nathan,

My understanding of Byington's was that the Society bought the rights because they wanted to publish it, because it used Jehovah instead of LORD or GOD . For some reason, as years went by, they have certainly not drawn much attention to this translation, but I don't think their intent was ever to suppress it.

Do you have any other evidence to back up your theory, or any other examples of the Society buying the rights to a publication just to suppress it?

I'm sure I've seen Byingtons quoted in some JW publications, tho I can't remember where.

By the way, what is the recommended translation, for an ex JW to read, (occasionally I feel like reading the bible but don't want to read the NWT). Besides Byingtons, which I have, what is the best modern-language english bible?

My opinion, the nrsv (new revised standard version) for reading and study, the amplified for serious study, niv for light reading/general use.

    Trumangirl,

    1) rsv (revised standard version)

    2) nrsv (new revised standard version)

I like the Catholic versions because they have all the books originally canonized, (RSCV & NRSCV)

I believe that, if the WT published their Bible online with other translations Bible Scholars and would tear it apart until it became a common joke among Christians. Way too dangerous to the Org.(anism)

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to a good bible to buy.

I just got rid of the final trailing j.w. books the other day. My 2 Aid to Bible Understandings..

Now all I have left is my well worn New World Translation.

I think I would like to have one bible in the house.

    any suggestions?..

    sincerely

Yes, there are a limited number of Byington Bibles published, but when have you heard reference to Byington's translation in a WT talk or publication? Can you walk into any Kingdom Hall and get a copy at any time, or is it a special order item? How many copies are published each year?

Actually, the Byington translation has been out of print and out of stock for some time now. After my ex took all my WT literature, I had to resort to eBay to get a copy.

Personally, I waver between the NIV and the NASB, though I'm leaning much more heavily toward the NASB these days. I used to use the NIV for daily reading and the NASB for more serious study (since it is a more literal translation). But since starting a course in Old Testament Survey, I am finding that the NASB reads just fine, and am using it most of the time now. About the only time I use the NIV anymore is at church, since I hate to entirely stop using the leather bound Bible I paid almost $50 for...
