I attended the 2004 Walk With God District Convention

I have a question; nothing new, but I only just noticed. Why does the program (and the WTS) refer to the convention goers as 'delegates?'

To be a delegate implies being delegated to go somewhere as a representative. Most conventions that have delegates are this way with a selected group of attendees chosen to represent a larger body of people. Afterall, not all local Democratic or Republican party members attend their respective party conventions, they send delegates. So why does the WTS use this word when congregations are expected to attend en-mass? Am I missing something or is this a hold-over from another era?

Probably because the JWs are literally assigned to which convention and dates to attend. I remember talks that scolded JWs for daring to attend conventions that they were not assigned.

Thanks everyone! I just got up and I'm trying to decide if I want to attempt to go again.

Oh, and regarding recording prayers... I was able to record the closing prayer. The attendant who tried to talk me out of recording anything was actually kneeling over my recorder at the time so that he could perform some sort of maintenance on the speaker. He didn't seem to have a problem with it... or perhaps he was very distracted with trying to figure out what to say to me. He seemed a bit embarrassed about what all he "tried" to tell me before and had kicked into "try to impress the worldly guy" mode. I think he knew that he screwed up royally by clearly demonstrating the true nature of the organization: A closed, high control cult.

Hmmm... come to think about it... he had a little walkie-talkie and was holding the "talk" button down during the entire prayer... and he started doing this just before the prayer started. In the past I have noticed that transmitters will interfere with electronics... I wonder if he was trying to scramble my recording of the prayer? I'll go test my recording and see if the prayer was recorded correctly.

I doubt that he has that kind of sophisticated wherewithall. It's more likely he was trying to pipe-in the prayer for the Brothers? on parking lot duty. LOL

That must be it! That sounds exactly like something they would do.

Oh, and I did check the recording and the prayer came through perfectly.

And if his plan worked, does that mean that HIS prayers were answered?

On a more serious note, do you think that as more of us do this "infiltration of conventions for worldly purposes" thing, that there'll be new directives clamping down on the sort of behaviour you displayed, Elsewhere?

There already are directives about that, Steph, but y'know some dubs are so disobedient!!

    Jehovah's Witness Convention

While many people are headed out of town this holiday weekend, thousands of others took this opportunity to walk with a higher power.

Local Jehovah?s Witnesses held their ?Walk with God? convention this weekend at Centennial Garden. More than 5,000 people from across the central valley filled the arena to hear the convention's message. Organizers say the idea is to highlight the importance of walking with God in these uncertain times.

"We're focused on improving the quality of life doing a better job with in the community, working at ways which we can make things better," said Jehovah?s Witness Jerry Haist.

The two day "Walk with God" convention is one of 200 taking place across the country.

That's not what *I* heard! "The world is evil!!!" "Don't be a part of the world!!!"... now THAT is what I heard.
