Greetings folks... I was 'compelled' to find a few more 'credible' statistics after reading some comments in another thread in the Child Abuse section. Until people are affected personally, I guess they just don't 'get it' when it comes to molesters/pedophiles, nor are they (evidently) compelled to do in depth reading about it until it 'hits home.'

    Quoted in other thread:
1994 National Institute of Health survey of 453 pedophiles, conducted by Dr. Gene Abel, showed these criminals were collectively responsible for the molestation of over 67,000 children. That's an average of 148 children per individual pedophile.

    Quoted Reply:
I'm sorry I think someone on this study misplaced a decimal point. 67,000 children by 453 pedophiles? That would mean that in a town my size one molestor would molest each kid on the 10 baseball teams we have. 140 kids - on average.

    And another:
...to point out that a molestor has victimized 4 children or 6 is a far cry from the "average" being 143. Maybe that really is the average, but I find it hard to believe. I hope it isn't.

    -------------

    Here are some 'quick stats' from two sources... (full links/details further below);

93,338 children were sexually abused in 1999. (National Center for Victims of Crimes)

117 - number of children victimized by average pedophiles in their lifetime before being caught

The offender who rapes and is incarcerated has had an average of 65 victims during his lifetime.

Perpetrators of sexual abuse are compulsive and repetitive in their offending behavior. The average pedophile will have an average of 244 victims in his lifetime.

42% of pedophiles begin their sexual abusing behaviors before the age of 12.

75% of all perpetrators begin offending before age 13.

Abel calculated the chances of getting caught for child molestation at approximately 3%.

Fewer than 1% of offenders are arrested, convicted and imprisoned.

Studies have revealed that 60-80% of adult sex offenders begin offending as adolescents.

Adolescents perpetrate 50% of sex offenses against boys, and 15-20% of offenses against girls. (Rasmussen, Buton, Chrisopherson, 1992)

The average pedophile can have an average of 244 - 300+ victims in his lifetime.

...national research shows that an adolescent sex offender will sexually abuse an average of 7 victims, but if left untreated will have about 380 victims in a lifetime

49% of incest offenders who molest girls within the family, molest girls outside the family as well.

Of those incest offenders who molest boys within the family, 61% molest females outside the family and 68% molest males outside the family.

The average length of an incestuous relationship is three years; it is rarely a one-time occurrence.
    -------------------

So, depending on when the molester begins his 'sex life,' and depending on whether he gets caught, becomes imprisoned, and/or 'gets help,' the stats show anywhere from 117 to 380 'average' victims for ONE pedo.
    -------------------

    More to come...

    Sexual Abuse Facts

Approximately 1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. Persons with developmental disabilities are sexually assaulted more frequently by a factor estimated between 4 and 10.

The average victim of child abuse is between 8 and 11 years old. Some experts suggest that the most vulnerable child is between the ages of 6 and 10, and living in a two-parent home. Some experts estimate that 5 or 6 children in a typical class- room of thirty have been affected by sexual abuse, regardless of geographic area, race, or socioeconomic class.

Approximately 90% of offenders are known to the children. In addition, a child is 3 times more likely to be molested by a recognized, trusted adult than by a stranger. 50% of child victims are molested in their own homes or in the offender's home.

The offender who rapes and is incarcerated has had an average of 65 victims during his lifetime. One recent study in Oregon found that more than 80% of known rapists were abused as children.

Some experts say that incestuous parents often love their children, but put their sexual intimacy needs before those of the children. Sometimes this is due to a crisis period in their lives or because boundaries in the family get confused or unclear. The average length of an incestuous relationship is three years; it is rarely a one-time occurrence.

The National Victim Center reports, "One out of every eight adult women, or at least 12.1 million American women have been the victim of forcible rape. Sixty-one percent of all forcible rapes occurred before victims reached the age of 18; twenty-nine percent occurred when the victim was less than eleven years old; and another 32% occurred between the ages of 11 and 17. Rape victims often suffer devastating mental health problems, with 31% developing Rape- related Post-traumatic Stress Disorder sometime in their lifetime. Rape-related PTSD dramatically increases the risk for major alcohol and drug abuse problems. They are 13 times more likely to have two or more major alcohol problems, and 26 times more likely to have two or more major drug abuse problems."

    The Perpetrator

Offenders are not usually strangers to children. According to the National Clearinghouse, approximately 90% of offenders are known to the children. In addition, a child is 3 times more likely to be-molested by a recognized, trusted adult than by a stranger. 50% of child victims are molested in their own homes or in the offender's home.

29% of offenders are relatives; 60% are acquaintances; and only 11% are strangers. (Russell)

Abel calculated the chances of getting caught for child molestation at approximately 3%. Fewer than 1% of offenders are arrested, convicted and imprisoned.

Giaretto found 80% of incestuous fathers in a sex offender treatment program were sexually abused as children, but did not report the abuse.

49% of incest offenders who molest girls within the family, molest girls outside the family as well.

Of those incest offenders who molest boys within the family, 61% molest females outside the family and 68% molest males outside the family.

Some experts say that incestuous parents often love their children, but put their sexual/intimacy needs before those of the children. Sometimes this is due to a crisis period in their lives or because boundaries in the family get confused or unclear. The average length of an incestuous relationship is three years, it is rarely a one-time occurrence.

42% of pedophiles begin their sexual offending before the age of 12.

75% of all perpetrators begin offending before age 13.

An article published 3/18/92 in the Atlanta Journal stated that "national research shows that an adolescent sex offender will sexually abuse an average of 7 victims, but if left untreated will have about 380 victims in a lifetime."

Heterosexual males present a greater risk to boys and girls.

    What We Know

In May, 1999, the Supreme Court of the United States determined that schools will be held accountable when one student sexually abuses another and the school knows about it but does not intervene.

It is a fact that not only adults who are in trusted and respected positions abusing children, but children are also abusing other children. Recent research shows that more than 50% of boy victims and 20 to 30% of girl victims are sexually abused by another child. When you consider that 1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys suffer sexual abuse before the age of 18, this is a large number of children abusing other children.

In addition, we know that abused children when left to cope on their own, are acting out in other destructive ways. They may take it out on themselves, becoming depressed or withdrawn, trying out drugs and alcohol to help them cope with their pain, or performing poorly in their academics. Or they may take it out on others, feeling better when someone else is hurt through verbal or physical aggression. Thus the cycle of abuse continues.

We know that adults must help to prevent or intervene in this problem but aren't adequately prepared to do so. If we are honest, we compound the problem because we find the topic of sexual abuse repugnant and are hesitant to discuss it at all. GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® participants are taught the signs and symptoms of abuse, how to respond to a child disclosing abuse; they also participate in a discussion with a child protective services social worker about the importance of intervention. Trainees are also taught how to conduct meetings with elementary school teachers, staff, parents and others about this critical issue.

We know that programs that are one-shot deals, or that focus on victim hurting, cannot do the job of prevention. Children need to learn skills that can empower them into prevention!!! GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® can be the solution. This comprehensive curriculum for children and training for educators has been rigorously evaluated by researchers at the University of Georgia and has been proven to be effective.

We know that a sensitive, skilled presentation of this difficult topic to our children is essential. Educators attending GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® are carefully trained and certified so they can feel comfortable and competent in teaching the information to classrooms of children. As a part of the training, teachers observe GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® modeled in three classrooms so they can see exactly how this sensitive subject is taught.

We know that children need to know what abuse is before they are able to participate in their own body safety. Children learn information that can serve as a primary prevention tool for stopping abuse before it starts. If abuse is already occurring, children can become empowered and motivated enough to take action to make it stop. GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® can also serve as trauma reduction for children who have already been abused, by helping them understand why abuse is never the child's fault and that abusers have many ways of harming children with their tricks.

An important part of the GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® curriculum with every grade level is teaching children about bullying. They learn it is never OK for one child to hurt another child. They are taught how to deal with angry feelings without causing harm to themselves or another person. Sexual Harassment is a curriculum component for the upper level students.

We know that when a child is alone with a perpetrator he or she has a chance to prevent abuse from happening if (s)he knows what abuse is and what (s)he can do about it. Children know they have the right to keep themselves safe!

    Signs and Symptoms

Telling about sexual abuse is extremely difficult for most children. They are afraid and often don't know how to tell about what has happened to them. Sometimes they have been bribed or threatened or made to feel responsible for their abuse.

No one wants to believe that sexual abuse could happen to their own child. The tragedy is that it can happen to anyone's child. While the presence of any one of the signs listed below does not necessarily indicate abuse, don't ignore the presence of several of the signs. If several signs are evident, talk to your child, but be careful not to ask leading questions. If you are uncertain about what you are noticing or are unsure about how to talk with your child about your concerns, contact your local child protective services agency for help. Help is also available through Childhelp USA's 24-hour crisis counseling and referral services hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD. Don't dismiss your concerns or fears. Ask questions. Don't be fraid to ask for help!

It is very important to find a therapist for your child if you discover that he/she has been sexually abused. Be sure that the therapist you select has experience with sexual abuse issues. And don't forget about yourself and the rest of your family. When sexual abuse happens, it effects the entire family; everyone will need support.

The following are some of the most common signs or symptoms of child sexual abuse:
    - acting out sexual behavior
    - inappropriate interest or knowledge of sexual acts and language
    - excessive touching of genitals
    - sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or urinary infections
    - chronic stomach aches, vomiting
    - an abrupt change in personality or behavior
    - nightmares, bed-wetting
    - drastic change in appetite- self-mutilation
    - withdrawal/depression
    - regressive behavior such as thumb-sucking
    - consistently anxious, fearful, irritable
    - reluctance to be with a particular person or in a particular place
    - over compliance
    - elective mutism
    - excessive aggression (particularly in boys)
    - running away, stealing, lying
    - early arrival at school or reluctance to go home
    - early use of drugs or alcohol

Additional Signs May Be Present In Older Children
    - drug and alcohol use
    - delinquency
    - running away
    - depression
    - early sexual involvement
    - promiscuity
    - suicide attempts
    - eating disorders (anorexia/bulimia)

Good-Touch/Bad-Touch® has been in existence since 1983...
    http://www.goodtouchbadtouch.com/aboutus.html

(snipped out these credentials, there's more at the site)...

Good-Touch/Bad-Touch® has been evaluated by professional staff at The University of Georgia and found to be effective prevention/education. It is the only prevention curriculum of its type to have successfully undergone rigorous research with results published (Behavior Therapy). The study was replicated for a doctoral dissertation in 1997 with the same results.

Good-Touch/Bad-Touch® has been evaluated by the National Mental Health Association in 1992 and again in 1997, and has been approved for listing in their Clearinghouse which "provides information about validated prevention programs to individuals and organizations throughout the world."

Good-Touch/Bad-Touch® is one of 54 programs listed in the 1998 publication School Health: Findings from Evaluated Programs developed by the American School Health Association in collaboration with Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service.

    Exceelent research

Some of the differences can be explained by increasingly better research studies and the varying definitions of sexual abuse.

Some studies with the smaller number include only abuse there there is touch of the genitals while other studies may include flashing behaviors, peepking, getting a child to act out sexually without touching them.

Sadly too few people think that adolescent perpetrators are not a serious threat. People are reluctant to report them because they are "a child".

The problem with this, however, is that since any form of sexuality can be an extremely addictive behavior. People don't outgrow a desire for sex - the desire increases and once it has been linked to inappropriate sexuality it is almost impossible to extinguish.

    Hypothetical Pedo Calculations
How often does the average guy like to (or would like to) have sex? 2 or 3 times a week? Is a pedo any different?

3 x week x 52 weeks: 156 sexual acts per year for the average guy.

At that rate, a pedo (if he could grab himself a kid whenever he wanted) could abuse 468 kids in just a few years.

Let's say this 'hypothetical pedo' can't get at the kids he wants... so spread 468 sex acts over a pedo's sexual lifetime of say age 20 to age 70. That's 50 years divided by 468 kid-sex-acts, which would mean the pedo would only have to 'get his hands on' less than 10 kids per year over a 50-year period (and that would be if he didn't molest the same kid more than once).

    True Life Pedo

As for abusing the same kid more than once, it is the experience in our family, with the (non-JW) pedo-uncle, that he abused the 6 boys over and over and over (and of the 3 girls in the family, only once [1 girl] or a few times each [2 girls]). Pedo-uncle also was abusing about 5 or 6 male cousins. Now, were we his ONLY targets in his life? VERY UNLIKELY because it is a researched and documented fact that pedos are chronic, unrelenting, and do not stop unless they are forced to do so.

And, as was stated in the links above, they can continue because they 'feel they have done nothing wrong.' (Words right out of my pedo-uncle's mouth when I confronted him; and those were also the same words the pedo-brother of a Ph.D. I went to had said, when the therapist visited his pedo-brother in prison. [The therapist cut off all communication with his pedo-brother after that, because there was no remorse, he said.]

I just 'had' to add my two-cents. One thinks they are 'completely over it' until they read comments by folks who just can't seem to believe sex abuse occurs on the large scale that it does.

All I can say is: Please wake up, people.

    Sincere Thanks.

I guess they just don't 'get it' when it comes to molesters/pedophiles

No kidding. I lost track of that thread and wasn't able to follow up like I should have. Thanks for doing this research.

It IS a far worse problem than most people feel comfortable with. It IS a far more widespread problem than people want to know. When I was a JW, I met lots of women who swore me to secrecy and told me horror stories of their abuse as children. They were very ashamed of it and had often told no one (literally) since it happened.

Since I've been out and on this board and others, I've run across the same thing. The difference being now that men have had the courage to come forward as well. It's a helluva thing for anyone to step forward and admit to being victimized, and you just don't realize how tough it is until it's your turn.

  • abbagail

;-) Thanks Lady Lee for the tumbs up, and also for explaining why the figures vary so widely. If I had a choice, I'd go with the studies who include peeping, flashing, etc. since all such abuse can do a number on a kid's little head.

Speaking of flashers -- during my JW years, age mid-30s, not having yet 'connected the sex abuse dots' in my life -- and I was at the big mall in town and I had my first flasher exposure. I remember I was horrified and terrified, and it must've showed on my face because it was like the guy then followed me all over the mall. Or either the mall was full of 'em that day, because it happened 3 times, in 3 different stores, on the same day. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown and didn't even know why, and I literally became paranoid wondering if the guy was following me, or was I going out of my mind? Ugh! I still remember the feeling.

Back to your post: I was sort of surprised at the statistics regarding the age the perpetrators begin and don't stop. Thanks for validating that most people feel child-aged abusers are no threat (Hello Watchtower); and of course, your well-stated explanation re: inappropriate sexual addiction (ie, desire for kids) makes mucho sense.

    Best to you!
    Gail
