I am talking a 3to 4 ft hornet nest in a tree that if you make any movement near it they sworm by the thousands. How do you get rid of a nest that big? The nest is actually on the land next to me , only about 10ft from my polebarn , i know of the person that owns the land ,he has no home there just uses it for hunting. Is it his responsability to get rid of the nest or mine? It is really getting so bad i am afraid for my Grand kids and dogs.
Any suggestions would be a greatly appreciated.

I am sure it is his responsibility by law, but if you need to get rid of for your own protection then here is what you do.
In the evening, when the hornets are quiet, shoot the nest with a flaming arrow. Thats what we do. One thing for sure, don't go near that nest! The nest will incinerate very quickly and kill all the hornets.
BTW, dont shoot it with a compound bow (the arrow will go through the nest). You can bend a good green stick and make a bow that will work for the job.
Hubby says you can also use a long stick or pole to light the nest with if you can get close enough.

I destoyed one years ago by pouring water on it. At night when they are all slow and tired and "at home" get a good strong power hose and aim. Then run.

I bought a can of that Hornet spray and sprayed the nest from waaaay back, like the can recommends. It killed the pesky critters as they were trying to leave their toxic home. They dropped right out of their nest! It worked great! End of problem! I couldn't use a flamethrower ... the nest was under my veranda ... And the mailman threatened to quit delivering my mail...

We had a hornets nest that was in an old car chair stored under our deck. We dragged it out in the pitch black, very quickly. Ran into the house, waited a while, back out, doused it with gas, lit it, end of hornets nest.
Wait till it's pitch black. They won't find you, but you sure as hell wouldn't want to stick around to find out if they do!
If you're too scared, you could call an exterminator. Completely unnecessary, though.

Don't listen to LW..she gives this same advice for everything from acne to dealing with the IRS.
In the evening, when the hornets are quiet, shoot the nest with a flaming arrow.
You should have seen the IRS building go up when I took her damn advice, and I even waited until the evening!
I've used the spraycans which shoot upto about 15 ft to kill a hornets nest...but I've never seen or heard of one as big as what you describe.

Some questions.
Are we talking yellowjackets (about the size of bees, with a yellow and black body) or true Hornets (black body and white head). There's a BIG difference. True hornets can kill you fast, a three to four foot nest of yellowjackets can kill you slowly. Which it is may effect what you want to do. If they are true hornets nobody but a licensed exterminator should mess with them.
I'd start by calling the neighbor, he may not know the nest is there and be willing to get rid of it to avoid a lawsuit (you are entitled to quiet enjoyment of your own property). If he is willing to take care of it then he can be the one to call an exterminator or burn it out himself. If he balks at that call your local animal control or pest control and ask them how best to proceed.
