A pyrethin-compound spray...they die in mid-flight. Be sure and tear down the nest, and squash the larvae.
Gasoline is also good; many a night I spent pouring gas onto ground-nests, stepping back 20 feet, and throwing a match--some satisfaction for the multiple stings at my ankles.

I just used Wasp/Hornet spray to get rid of one on the eve of my house. The next day I used the water house to wash it of. It was about the size of a foot ball. I will wait untill there are no strays flying around to clean it up.

Jefft we are talking hornets, and they ain't friendly. It was like watching something out of a movie, the sworm was huge ,and they were really mad

You should contact the local pest control. They will have access to the county tax records so they can contact the owner. I don't think this is one you want to mess with on your own.
Jefft, i am thinking you are right, this is some scary stuff.
If they're not bothering you, and the nest is far enough away, leave it. In the winter, knock it down. Don't kill them unless you have to. I have never been bit by one, but those yellowjackets sure like to buzz around when you are eating... very annoying, but hardly worth killing them off the face of the planet, so to speak.

Certainly will Carmel, but the nest isn't the problem, it is the hornets inside the nest, and the shotgun won't get all of them. At that point you will be up that well known creek.
Poke the darned thing with a six or seven foot long stick, whack it a few times for good measure.
