I also just remembered. There have also been some reports of bats being infected w/West Nile virus. So a bunch of dead birds or bats could mean infected mosquitos in your area...um don't mean to make you paranoid...*LOL*

hehe, well that's just great....I'm never leaving my apartment again.

Last year our zipcode was in the newspaper for having the most cases reported of west nile......and now bats on top of it...

Desi, I don't know why but I seem to recall someone saying something about Longview also,,,,,,that is even closer , so be careful.

Since we are in a subdivision , but still living in the country,,,,we get alot of wild animals coming over to get in trash cans for a midnight snack all the time. Racoons are especially to be careful of as they carry rabies alot when there is an outbreak and they are more likely to get close to your home because of their pillfering ways.

Remember, if you see a wild animal,,,,,,even a bat acting "strange" that can be a warning of rabies. An animal infected will lose his fear of man,,,,,,,like the raccoons will not run from kids, etc.

BTW,,,,,,,,Desi,,,,,,,we need to plan a mini mini apostogether ..... I feel the need to hit Pier Bossier Mall!!!!

    Lyin',

I found this story about Texarkana....which as you know isn't far at all.

It was just strange to me since I had never encountered one before. The maintenance people for our complex just stopped by to do a few things and I asked them about it. They said that there have been other instances of bats in this complex. One of them even said that bats were brought in to the Shv. area to help get rid of the mosquitos.

Hey, about the mini-fest...sounds great to me.....just call me sometime and we can schedule a trip to the mall. If you don't have my no. anymore, just pm me.....

Officials: Bats no rabies threat to apartment tenants posted: 07-15-2004

Arkansas officials say there's no health threat to residents of a Texarkana apartment complex where bats have been living.

Those bats have been the focus of attention since four people died of rabies after getting organs or an artery from a Texarkana
donor who died in Texarkana May 3 after contracting rabies.

The disease was found in William Beed Jr. after his organs and an artery were transplanted into other patients. Those four transplants were done at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and all four people died of rabies.

The Arkansas health department sent a letter to the owner of The Willows apartment complex in Texarkana, saying the bats don't need to be eradicated.

In Arkansas, bats are considered protected wildlife, making it illegal to kill or poison them unless rabies exposure has occurred. Bats often are infected with rabies.

Bats will pretty much live anywhere they can find shelter and a ready supply of their favorite foods.

Yep. Around here, the smaller bats like to live under the loose bark of shagbark hickory trees. They also will set up housekeeping in attics and church belltowers and any other place that provides a dark, cool refuge during the day. We see them regularly at dusk, flying around snatching mosquitoes & other insects.

We do periodically get them in the house. The most memorable occasion was right after our daughter was born. Mrs. O woke me at about 2 am & told me there was a "bird" flying around our bedroom. I finally got out of bed & beat it to death with a 2 x 4, then went back to sleep.

There was a dead bat lying at the bottom of our porch steps this morning, too. One of the cats likes to kill bats, but he refuses to eat them.

I have a almost phobic fear of bats! They do start flying around here in the country at dusk and they make me shudder although I haven't ever had one touch me. Just their looks are enough to turn my stomach though.

A couple of years ago my grandson saw one in the bathroom and came out to tell us. We had no idea how it got in there (we DO have indoor plumbing, lol!) and hubby proceeded to try and coax it back outsde with a broom.

It had other ideas, and took off into the living room where I was sitting there cowering! It took about 20 minutes to finally get it out the door and another 20 mintues to peel ME off the ceiling!

Hubby thinks they're cool and keeps telling me the virtues of bats vs mosquitoes----but I couldn't care less WHAT they eat!

One time when my boys were small, they had one upstairs in their room and brave old me went up and when I just couldn't get it to fly out the window----I ended up "offing" it between the curtain and the wall (eeeewwwww). It was him or me! My legs were shaky all that night after THAT one!

I am SO terrified of them!

    hugs

I was in Chicago one time, and decided to walk along Lake shore Drive one early morning. I saw a cat attacking what I thought was a little bird, so I chased the cat away, and went up to the bird. It's wings were all folded up, so I reached down to pick it up, and when I touched it it opened it's wings, and bit me-It WASN"T a bird, it was a bat! Took a little chunk out of the tip of my finger. I had to go to the hospital, they called the sherriff out, and I had to fill out a report for the city because of being bitten by a wild animal, and then I had to go through a series of Rabies shots. The first shot they injected right into the wound, the second shot was a bright pinkish color that went into my thigh, that stuff hurt like anything I have ever felt. When I got back home to Minneapolis I had to finish the series of rabies shots at specific intervals, and was a total pain in the butt!

To this day though, I still try to save defensless little animals, but am a little more cautious, and am always reminded of that freakin' bat...

    Ouch!

That was sweet of you to try to save it if it had been a bird, though.....
