Doom 3 and demonism

My witness friends and i bought Doom 3 yesterday to play at my house. I let one of my friends play first and it scared him so he quit. Next day at the meeting, I tell them how intense the game is, and they are all like "you should burn the game you should throw away the game. Youll bring demons into your house." And then they start telling me stories of demonic encounters. One of the most entertaining was this one incident that happened in the woodlands congregation. A scream was heard from the back of the hall and it went to the stage and back to the back and went out the door. And then my friends told me they will quit the band if I keep the game(We all started a rock band, and play it at my house, also started watching porn, which they looked up on my computer... I was surprised) So they were like cool I thought but now uncool with the preaching to me.

Does anyone believe in demons or had an encounter?

Beliefs ARE demons, in a more general sense without the fear factor.

This does remind me of a something though. I have a now ex-JW friend who once hosted a showing of Army of Darkness at my house for young witness guys when he was living there. At the time I didn't watch it with them, but having seen it since I now appreciate how enlightened he was as a JW, I would recommend it as a sort of medicine for the demon fear syndrome. If you don't know about it, it's basically a comedy - but with a lot of horror elements with the undead (called "deadites" in the film) and such. Stuff like Scarey Movie is one thing, but Army of Darkness has the serious horror elements mixed with the comedic aspect that it is quite unique and appropriate to such a situation. You may not want to play it for them so soon after the Doom 3 incident, and it probably won't be a cure even after they see and even like it, but check it out if you haven't seen it - you'll see what I mean.

Well, this is an interesting topic and one that could potentially raise the heat!

I used to work in the games industry and let's say, I have been exposed to 1 or 2 (ahem) video games over the years, including the more extreme & controversial titles.

I also own a couple of games systems, which are partially neglected now due to other interests (reading/art etc).

Do I think video games can be harmful? - yes! After working within the industry and hearing accounts and seeing letters from video game fans, I believe that the fantasy world of gaming, for some, may cross into and effect reality. This leaves a responsibility upon the rest of us to guard the vulnerable (and stupid!).

We used to promote the Lara Croft character (amongst others) and it shocked me, time and time again, when engaging in ridiculous discussions over the telephone about the character and how real this character had become in some users minds. I am not just refering to children either; young adults were also snared by the sexual lure of Lara's silicon breasts. We continued to fashion this character to tap in to this obsessive trend amongst the fans.

The marketing team, for another video game, (in all their wisdom?) decided to use a real old-school cockney gangster as a vehicle of promotion at trade shows. The game involved setting up smuggling rings, outwitting the police, and using violence against members of the public to enforce criminal standards.

This all seemed like a big joke at the time. When working in this environment you can see that the main emphasis is money, money, money! The consequences of the game's ethics rarely played a part in any campaign discussion. The more outrageous the better to be honest with you! If the company thought they had a unique selling point that would grab media attention, then great, go for it!

    ... onto Demons.

I'm not absolutely sure to be honest whether playing a video game within itself can open portals to the world of spirits, but I have a feeling that for some, it may. I have read many accounts of people who have had encounters with malevolant spirits and one theory is that a vortex of negative energy may allow a spirit to earth themselves. So possibly it is the energy transmitted by the player that causes the problem, rather than the actual game theme?

Obviously this depends upon your viewpoint. If you do not believe in the spirit world, then fine, "do what thou wilt".

Putting the demons aside for a moment, I do feel that the video game industry needs to address the issue of ethics and would do well to take a look at companies like Nintendo, who tend to produce titles that have a feel-good factor and are far more family orientated.

I do not think video games are evil per-se, but like anything in this world, there is an element of moral degradation within the industry.

I think it's really got to be down to the individual, and their perception of / reaction to the games. Games are now rated according to their content, and as such parents and shop owners should be more responsible when allowing people access to these games.

Personally, I love video games, including the violent / horror games. It's an escape for me, but one I can switch off from when I come back into reality.

I think it's possible that if there are already underlying mental issues (discovered or not), they can be aggravated by these games. But whose responsibility is it overall ?

If they take them off the shelves, people will cry out "it's censorship". They have put warnings and age ratings on them, people are saying "It's not enough".

As regards demons, that's a stock WTBTS response to almost anything that they frown upon.

They say get rid of doom 3 - I'd say find some better band members!!

    Bull!

i'm a jw, and i don't believe in all that demon stuff. they say: "get rid of that cd, that computer game, that movie" and what not (even kid-stuff like harry potter, lotr and sabrina the teenage witch.. lol) because you'll let get demons into your house. well, i would understand if some demon would come to my house to open a bottle of beer with me, but i don't get why a demon would be attracted by harry potter!

i could understand if they would come to play doom3 a bit though. i guess it's a pretty cool game. i personally always was attracted to such games and i only didn't get doom2 when i was little, because my parents would ask me about the pentagrams in the game. after some time every jw will get used to that, first let them play some killing-only game, without demons, something like half-life, battlefield or whatever.

to say it with king arthas (wc3:tft) word's: "let the killing begin"

Crizlee:I suggest hiding the game, and playing it when they're not around.

You might want to concoct a really outragious story about how it wouldn't burn and then exploded, or something. But it'll be hard not to smile while telling it!

    ElBlanko:
I don't think the game itself can open a portal, but the "intent" that accompanies it might...
(but you're right - many don't believe in that).

The only demons that came around to my house, when playing computer games, were ones like Bull01Lay, above

    Google:
Aye, it's rank superstition, for the most part (especially from the JW's).
    Love the pentacle avatar, btw

not to mention all that "subtile messages when played backward" nonsense...

btw: all my jw friends already got doom3. but i fear it won't run on my old box :.-(

if you believe in videogames bringing demons into your house, why stop there? how about movies, books, magazines, food packaging (count chocula? boo berry?), food itself (there are ghost marshmallows in those cereals, you know...), drinks (bloody mary?), pots, pans, doorknobs, doors, hinges, 2x4's...

why don't we go and live naked in the woods, with our eyes closed and hands pressed over our ears. that way there's no way we could inadvertantly see, touch, taste or hear anything that might bring the demons into our lives.

gimmee a break. if you believe that an item will bring some kind of evil force into your life, it will...your imagination will make sure of it.
