I have to share a story my grandfather told me. He's 99, and came to Canada from England during WW1 at the age of 12 or so. A few years ago he wrote his experiences into a book - and its an amazing document.
While still in England, he had a friend who was a member of the "Russellites". His friend told him that the world was going to end very soon according to prophecy. the friend attended meetings where he learned that god was going to kill millions of people. My grandfather said they put up big signs at their meeting hall, saying "millions now living will never die". In a little while, another sign went up saying that only thirty days of life on earth remained. Each day they changed the number of days on the sign, counting down. When only a couple of days remained, my grandfather's friend and his family, along with all the other Russellites, went out to a big area outside of town, where they had set up tents, and everyone settled in, bringing nothing but some food and blankets, to pray and wait for the heavenly chariots to come and take them up to heaven.
On the final day, my grandfather and some of his friends went out to visit the camp to see what was happening. He says they were curious and wanted to see these fiery chariots that were coming down from heaven. the weather got worse, cold and rainy, but the Russellites were still there, waiting. My grandfather stayed all day, getting soaked in the rain, but no chariots arrived. He then got punished for coming home late. The next morning my grandfather's friend arrived at his door, wet and miserable, to announce that he and his family were moving away. My grandfather says he heard nothing more of the Russellites after that (until, ironically, his son married into a family of JW's). In his book, he points out, with humour, that the exact spot where the Russellites were waiting has now been turned into Heathrow Airport - and now huge chariots (747's) take passengers up to the sky...to heavenly locations like Hawaii!
After my grandfather wrote that book & my mother and JW family read this piece, they were extremely angry at him and really began to dislike the man. guess it hurts to have your foolishness exposed! For my part, I thought it was really neat to hear the story from the viewpoint of someone who actually saw what JW's did in 1914.
I remember how great the emphasis was on the "generation not passing away" being proof that the end was imminent, and I find it amazing that they try to wiggle out of it now. Just one more proof that we are right in staying far away from the lies and hypocrisy (as if we needed it).

Wait you get teary eyed for WW1 vets? That was one of the bloodiest and most useless wars in history. Nobody should have fought in that war. I don't mean disrespect. But beside invent adolf hitler, modern tools of war, and a few other characters what non evil thing came from that war?
It was the result of German industrialists attempts to garner greater share of African and Asian colonies and their raw materials and endless cheap labor. The kaiser bought into it. Yes it was stupid and useless;
But if the USA hadn't stepped up, we'd have all been talking German. If Britain and France hadn't hung together, we'd all be heiling the German Kaiser right now. So on one hand, yes, it was a bad war fought over stupid reasons (especially because once it was over, Europe couldn't afford its colonies anymore) but the Germans had to be stopped. so our boys did the right thing and I'm proud of them.
I mean no disrespect, but you obviously haven't thought it through. Given that German aggression happened, would you suggest ignoring it? Hugging a Heinie until they go home?

I think that you do. It's extremely disrespectful to tell someone who put they're lives on the line, be it for good or not, that they're war was nonsense.
In other words, who gives a crap. Don't start pissing off war vets. They're old, and they deserve respect.

Run, In all seriouness, why are you still talking about "this generation"? The WT has stopped talking about this since 1995, my friend. You seem to believe in something that they don't believe any longer since 9 long years ago. Observador.

Sounds like what britain had dallied in, and what america has been doing since at least nixon. Not really a stupid idea, according to todays industrialists and investors, just attempted by someone else. So, ww1 boils down to a war over trade/money/markets/manufacture. Some things never change.

I disagree. Remember, history is written by the victors.
Germany was sucked into WW1 through treaties, as was the British empire. The war propaganda machine portrayed Germany as the plotters and perpetrators of the war, but this was not true. This was the same propaganda machine that reported that German soldiers were chopping off the hands of boys in Belgium so they couldn't fight. It's the same propaganda machine that reported German soldiers throwing babies in the air and spearing them with their bayonets. None of this was true.
The true roots of WW1 go back to 1870 and involve the never ending quest for British world dominance. I won't go into it further here, since I seldom come to this site, and won't be around to argue the point. The information is out there if you do some research.

I reference to the JW "Old Light" belief that "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" - that staunch teaching of the WTBTS died in 1995.
The "New Light" - which has also been taught in WT articles since then - is that "This Generation" could mean the same as "Noah's Generation" which some jw's have said was at least 120 years long. There's been several threads on this WT Doctrine Change on this site.
Some JW's are looking to the year 2034 for "The End of This Old System" - but that's just the locals.......and the WTBTS is smart enough to slip in words here & there and just let the local jw's spin their new fairytale of "Life Everlasting on Paradise Earth."
lol - the slogans that Never Die.

The problem I have is that Noah's Generation was filled with near immortal super humans and half demons. A life span of 120 years is only a recent achievement and is far from common. To Imagine the falacy Noah did not have his sons until he was 500 years old and lived 350 years after the flood. That makes a generation in noahs day aroun maybe 800 years.
