Grrrrr... they turned off my cable

I have had a cable modem for at least three years now and as a side effect I had basic cable the whole time... today I get home to find that some fcker from Comcast put a filter on my line to block the cable signal. What makes it even worst is the fcker parked his truck in my driveway blocking me in this morning.

What really pisses me off is that earlier this year Comcast sent me a letter saying that because I did not subscribe to any cable service, they were going to add a $10 a month surcharge to my cable modem service... their way of forcing me to pay for basic cable. Now all of the sudden they want to force me to actually subscribe to the cable service, plus all kinds of "extra" charges that cannot be avoided.

    This REALLY pisses me off.

I still have my DirecTV dish up and all I have to do is plug it back into my TV... but I am still restricted because I don't use a land-line phone at home. For at least six years I have only used a cell phone and I have NO desire to pay an extra $40 a month just so my damn satellite box can make a phone call every few days.

Does anyone know of a satellite box that can use my Ethernet LAN to communicate with DirecTV?

I feel your pain. I don't know about ethernet, but I've had DirecTv for 4 years now and I love it. The only thing is never call their customer service. Like anyone else, it sucks big time. The only people who have worse customer service is Dell.

The only time I've called Comcast it was a good experience. As you know, I've got 2 computers and they walked me through hooking them up in network (or whatever it's called) so that Nina and I can surf at the same time.

    Elswhere,

My God, but life can be tough. It is much more pleasant here in Albania, you should move here.

You don't understand HS. Cable TV is a cherished right of all Americans. The Founding Fathers even put in the Constitution.

Or maybe it was in the book of Hezekiah. I always get them confused.

An option might be to ditch cable and go to dsl for your internet. You'll feel good about yourself for squeezing every last drop of capability out of decades old copper; it's the right thing to do ;). You can then get a voice over IP phone for 14.95 per month, and get free long distance all over America and Canada to boot. That would give you fast internet, phone, and a phone line for your satalite (I'm assuming the satallite could use the IP phone, I don't see why not). The dsl service will likely even provide you with a wireless router if you ask.

Total pre-tax bill should be about 50.00

I'm probably going to get this service, www.lingo.com on the 19.95 unlimited plan. I'll get three months free, and free calls to Western Europe, of which France just happens to be a part, with that. The other big player in this is www.vonage.com and their prices are similar, but no French Freedom calls.

One cool aspect of voice over IP is that you can request any area-code (and I think they may give you more than one number. If not, an extra is cheap, in case you ever wanted a New York phone number).

Six, a few years ago I looked into doing that (except for the Voice over IP of course) and in calling several companies, they all told me that I did not have to subscribe to phone service to have the DSL service, but they ALL kept asking me for the phone number I wanted it to work on. I would tell them that I did not have a land line, just my cell phone. At that point they would tell me that I needed a phone number, but still insisted that I did not need to subscribe to phone service.

lmao... I went around in circles with several guys from several companies and NONE of them could understand the logic of why I could not give them a phone number from a phone service that they said I did not need to subscribe to.

Ok... I just got off the phone with Satan's Minions manifested in the form of Comcast and Signed up for their HDTV DVR Digital Cable service. That comes out to $32.94 for the digital cable service plus $9.95 for the HDTV DVR box until the end of the year. Then it goes up to $56.20 + 9.95... plus tax. One good thing is that they told me they will stop charging me that $10 a month fee for having the cable modem without cable service. Maybe in January I'll call and threaten to cancel my service if they don't put me on another discount plan.

Does this mean that I now technically have a contract with the devil??? I'm afraid he's gonna be sorely disappointed to find that I have no soul for him to collect on... I hauked that at a pawn shop years ago to pay for a break job.

Despite what the techs and service reps tell you, neither Direct TV nor Dish Network boxes really need a phone line except for pay-per-view. I've got a three room system and there's not a phone line hooked to any of the three boxes.

DSL, Dude! It beats the tar out of a cable modem. Noth that it makes it any easier to write out that $175-200 check every month to Sprint for the two phone lines, DSL, long distance, and other assorted services (plus, of course, the taxes, surcharges, maintenance fees, and other assorted crap). But all 4 computers tie back thru a wireless network to the DSL modem and we surf, upload, download, and e-mail to our heart's content (and our customers' delight), I like it.
