    Simple,

Most of my mistakes were made EARLY on in my adult life.

Had a "brother" paint my house.

    If I remember it right...

I had two places. One was mine and I had a one bedroom condo that I rented out to this "brother."

I gave him a months free rent to paint my townhome and "his" condo.

Ok. MY home was a disaster. He spilled paint all over my carpet and even WALKED over it so you saw a shoe print in paint.

And "his" condo he painted (and I kid you not), white with the colors of the Nigerian Flag going across the upper 1/10th of the ceiling. Something like Green and Red.

Don't ask me why - even though he was a dub.

He was a Nigerian brother and he was like real proud of his heritage.

Anyway, when I saw it, I FREAKED OUT.

The deal was that it was OK, but he HAD to repaint it back to white before he left his lease.

So the disaster continued when he was repainting his home after the lease was up.

He tried to paint it white, but the RED and GREEN would still show through the white paint.

It was one of the most crazy experiences.

And HATE to bash on the dubs, but it seems EVERY single brother I've met takes such great pride in thinking they are a handyman and can do anything from Painting to Carpentry.

NOT to say they aren't people that can, but they hang wallpaper one time at a quick build and suddenly they are a pro at it.

Growing up my mother painted her kitchen "peach" it was actually bright ORANGE and she kept it that way for 20+ years! Every peice of trim in the house, was , at one point, SADDLE BROWN, that was the actual name of the colour! Then there was the shag carpet in my room as a child, we had pink walls and ORANGE and BROWN carpet in there, I took it out when I was old enough to just do it without asking!

When hubby and I bought the house we live in now, the previous owners had painted the basement room black and blood red! EWWW they didn't even try to paint over it to show the house! We had to rip out the walls to get rid of it!

Sassy, it's just too bright. First, I am going to get my room done --- you know the suite part, two small walls before I get the KILZ out. I picked out a pretty yellow to go in there.

Confusiouc, if you use KILZ over bright colors, it prevents it from bleeding out when you go over it with the color of your choice.

So no one has any remodel disasters or buildings collapse??

That's, in my opinion, just a "Christ complex". It's the idea that "I'm a handyman - JUST LIKE JESUS".

I've had my share of bad experiences with those kind of things. My ex wanted me to paint our house bright yellow. I told her that she was in charge of the inside appearance of the house, but the outside and the garage was mine. I painted it white with yellow shutters...and a nice lemmon yellow...not the neon that she seemed to want.

    Sally,

dont feel so bad. Anything can be changed.....

My wife gave me free reign to redesign our main floor bathroom ( since I am an architect she thought it would keep me focused and busy---she did not want to be bothered).

white glass mosaic floor tiles, white thassos marble accent, white "subway" tile walls---chrome accessories, turquoise color accent. A very 1930s retro look....

The reality is that we have 3 small children coming and going and everyone has a friend over---fingerprints and dirt-hand smudges everywhere--the white glass mosaic floor tiles now look like they are from a NYC subway--they can never be clean enough. Needless to say it has to be cleaned daily.

Tough, we live with it and my wife will never let me design another house project.

As your approaching the bathroom any flash backs to the "green mile". LOL

We painted a room a nice green one time. It looked nice on the colour patch. Then when we painted a room with it, turned out a slime/lime and I swear you had to put on sunglasses to go in that room.

    It was FreakY disaster.

There are colour that calm people down when they go into rooms painted certain colour.. need I say this colour was not one of them.. Iol. It made you feel freaked out.

Actually, Jesus was a trained carpenter. I'd love to see him do electrical work!

We happen to be remodeling our condo. Split entry - Kitchen Liv, Dining up, Bedrm, Hall, Laundry closet down. Rebuilding stairs. (We did bathrooms 3 years ago; mid level bedroom is a library-and was redone 10 years ago and there is no way we are going to move all those books, and 3rd bedroom, well, we just wont go there... ;)

We ended up ripping out 2 walls of sheetrock because of the celltex behind it to get at the wiring. We ripped out the soffits above the cabinets so we could regain that space with ceiling-high cabinets. We ripped out part of a partition wall. Went down to the subfloor and added underlayment. The stairs were so bad Kevan had to patchup and rebuild the stringers!

The place was built in 1973-4 when craftsmanship had been dead for 10 years, and building codes hadn't caught up.

So far the things that have gone WRONG have been very minor, and either easily repairable or tolerable. Except one:

Installing the Icemaker in the older GE fridge. THAT had been a real pain in the arse!

I called GE and asked what icemaker to buy for our model of fridge. They told me. We bought it. Everything will install except the electrical outlet in the freezer is completely different from the plug on the icemaker!

I called GE. I was told that everything was there to install it properly. I explained a third time what the problem was. She spoke with her supervisor. "Oh, there was an adaptor for that, but we no longer manufacture it. I'm sorry." "Do you have the mfg number?" "No, we don't." "Can I speak with your supervisor?" hold "No, I'm sorry, there is no one else here you can speak with."

I'm not often speachless, but I was several times during that conversation.

Our solution is to find/buy the plug and wiring from a new freezer and rewire ours. The cost difference is $70 vs $500+ for a new fridge with icemaker. I'm a nerd when it comes to electronic stuff and this "should" be relatively easy, if I can just FIND the @*$(# part.

BTW KILZ works fairly well for stain and bright paint coverage. You still may have to use several coats to get good coverage. I've had to use 4-6 coats to keep the brown wood stain from bleeding through on our woodwork. But I'm getting there...

At least a bamboo bathroom is small and easily repainted....

    Hugs

    Bren
