Funny that you mention that. I had a picture of two guys kissing and was going to use that . I think it's equally as hot. BUT, last time I had a picture that "offended", it was taken down and I was not notified. Kinda pissed me off.. but I'm treading lightly.
Franz said it best when he described the relationship as "institutional friendships"
It may be annoying to us now, but was it annoying when we were still "in"?
I always thought of the phrase as somewhat unusual. I thought it wasn't a very good word to use, since nobody is absolutely sure that the JW religion had "the truth".
One thing that really gets me is that I catch myself saying the phrase in real life. It was a habit, and is still somewhat in place because my mother uses it a lot. I accidently used it at the last apostofest and was immediately taken out back and kicked in the mouth.
Actually I found the term friends used more by oldtimers from my mother's generation and older or people who had picked it up from them.
I can remember when the WTS referred to men and women as a group as "brothers." Never "brothers and sisters." That irritated me more than the gender nonspecific friends.
One sister told me about an older anointed sister in her congregation who sat at the front of the KH and muttered "and sisters" whenever the speaker said "brothers" and obviously meant sisters too.
Friends sounded like a Quaker term to me and so I never used it. I would like to get rid of "sister" and "brother" from my religious vocabulary.

You know what I find annoying? The "Association Phone List", one page. My baptised honey has attended this Kingdom Hall for a couple years, but he still doesn't rate the "Association Phone List." My church directory is called "Members and Friends" and they work really hard to get EVERYBODY in it...32 pages.
My (elder) father still uses that term "the friends" drives me nuts!
Eh and then there are these "The Friends"...

Back in the 1980"s we had a CO "Tony DeSente" I think was his name. He always refered to cong. members as the "family". Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........wonder if he had some godfather connections before becoming a JW?
