Terry,
I have to agree with "princess" that you have a very patronizing tone to your replies.
Sorry I missed your own posted definition of poison, but regardless that wasn't the point I was trying to make. My reply was in reference to Euphemism's post...
I enjoy your posts and have the highest respect for your intellect. But if you can't see the difference between an honest discussion of opinions and telling people that they are "poisoning" their children, I personally don't feel that there's much to gain by discussing this with you.
I did read your original post and those thereafter, and I still believe that your subject title implies that fantasy is a poison.
I suppose in your need to look for something to critisice, you overlooked my other post in answer to your comment...
I'm looking for the reason WHY you think not telling a child the truth is a BETTER idea.
My reply was that telling my children the truth about Santa would destroy the fantasy. I don't think fantasy is wrong or that it damages a child.
CZAR commented...
You specifically framed at least part of the discussion as to the effects of the JW "fairytale" on everybody here
I agree, Terry you did do that...at least I felt the same way when reading your post.
Also, in your reply to gentlyferal comment...
gentlyferal says: You raise the most hackles here with your repeated assumption that the Santa Claus story actually does harm. You haven't proved that to be so.
your commented with "Lying to children does no harm? And I have to PROVE that?"
Yeah, you should prove it...that is the whole point of your discussion, isn't it? Actually he was asking you to prove that the Santa Claus story actually does harm, and I don't believe many here equate telling their children a harmless fairytale to lying.
Wow, I really do feel like I am defending my beliefs to a JW once again!

O M G LOL Princess- I didn't even see that one !! Good grief !!
Although I do partially agree with Terry's premise.. he can be condescending.. . I think more respect and consideration could be garnered if that was toned down..
XW,
I am still laughing from your reply... You really made your brother get up on the roof?...LOL! Ask him if he is available this coming Christmas...my seven year old is getting too smart for me!
Terry,
May I buy you a shovel?

LOL mpatrick !! We didn't even have to make him do it. He did it all by himself. We didn't even know what he was up to at the time- we were waiting for him to come back to the card game !!
Ah, 7- what a wonderful age !! I'll ask him- he's a sucker for putting a smile on a kid's face !!
XW

Offering a truce might be a good move on this one. A flock of peckish women can be annoying.

As I see it, Christmas is a ritual celebration of Jesus birthday and as such, has a place for every one. The little children that believe have the unique opportunity to experience joy in a real state of innocence and wonder. When that get older and find out the truth they take a new role in the game unharmed and still excited to play there new more adult part.
Imagination is extremely important to the development of abstract thought. The youngest babes seem to think people cease to exist when they are out of the room. It is only later that the baby can imagine the person continuing to exist out of sight. The process of separating what we know form what we believe is a lifelong one and is not harmful in itself however, it can be manipulated to cause harm.

Yeah, Satan- none of us (including some men here ) actually had a valid point- we were merely pecking away aimlessly. Sorry to have annoyed you.
