Okay, all you muscians out there lets discuss music theory. Post your favorite chord or chord progression licks, runs, fills or substitute chords here.

Of course the most popular in jazz is the 2-5-1 progresion. In the key of C that would be:

Dm-G7-CM (Dminor 7th chord** G dominant 7th chord ** Cmajor7th chord). You can substitute a Db7 chord for the G7th chord because they share two of the same notes. These two tones strongly suggest a V chord.

This is how tritone substition works: The two most important notes in seventh chords are the 3rd and 7th. The interval between the 3rd and the seventh of a dominant 7th chord is called a tritone. So, counting up from the the root of the G we arrive at B the 3rd and F the 7th.

Notice that these two notes (B and F) make up the 7th and 3rd of Db7th. So now we have this progression:

    Dm-Db7-CM (Dminor 7th chord** G dominant 7th chord ** Cmajor7th chord).

What are your favorites musical devices?

D sus 4 is my fave chord, but I am rather partial to pratting around with D in general, as with hammer ons-offs on the E sting and nifty arpegiation and alternation between 2nd and 3rd frets on the first three strings, based on the D-shape, can produce lots of usable riffs.

I tend to really enjoy using the sliding blues method with basic blues progressions there just seems to be countless combinations that can either rock or sound blues like . Lately I've been trying to be more creative and finding it a little difficult . I am one of those players who doesn't think learning other peoples music by using tabs makes a better musician . I think to be creative is more important . I've already seen countless bands that play cover tunes and most are very impressive but still does not show real talent . It's like someone copying the mona lisa and saying it looks like the original .

Hey, Abaddon I didn't know you played. How long have you been at it? I've been at it for about 22 years. Yea, I like sus chords they kind of have a floating sound, at least to my ears. What scale do you normally play over that chord? Over a regular sus chord I normally play a mixolydian scale. And depending on the situation (like when I'm soloing) I try and simplify things. For example a 2-5 progression can usually be combined into a single chord. So in the key of C: D-7 and G7 can be combined into a single G sus chord. If the chord contains a flat 9 or sharp nine then I use the second degree of the F melodic minor scale.
Of course you could also use a phrygian scale for this chord (Gsusb9) but you have to
watch out for the b13 avoid note. M'

Heathen I love the blues too. Esp. blues in F, I normally alter the chords. So a simple 1-4-5 progression:

    F7-Bb7-F7-F7 ** Bb7-Bb7-F7-F7** C7-Bb7-F7-C7

    Becomes:

    F7-Bb7-F7-F7 ** Bb7-Bb7-F7-D7** Gm7-C7--(F7-D7)(Gm9-C7)

Note; I took the liberty of adding a turnaround at the end of the progression. When soloing over these changes I use the standard F blues scale. You could also try a mixolydian scale since these are dominant chord types. I experiment with lydian dominant, dominant bebop and major pentatonic type of scales as well.

mercurious? --- sounds interesting . I usually stay away from the 7th chords tho but do have some songs that use similar progressions that I've been writing . I like to use the pentatonic and dorian scales as well , harmonic scales can work such as what Van Halen likes to use . I also like to play bass guitar sometimes just to get funky . I think you really need big hands to be a good bass player, mine are not big so guitar is easier for me .

Yea, guitar was my first instrument. Followed by bass, piano, drums and a little sax. Anyone else here besides me and farkel play the piano?

Hate to see a music thread go to waste.....

I've dabbled with music all my life, it's probably the only thing that has been somewhat consistent...LOL

If it sounds right to you, then somewhere in the theories of music there is a law that applies and allows for it. I've bought many books, attempted somewhat to understand and to a certain extent I have. Once in a while I discover a concept and say...."that's interesting"....but most of the time I like to see what I can come up with on my own.

I use midi files to practice. Some midi files are well done so I use those. I use a midi editor such as cakewalk, remove most of the tracks and leave the drums, bass and some non interfering keyboard tracks and I just jam with the song.

Some stuff that I do OK.......Smooth, Sultan of swing, Crazy train, Hotel California, The Wall, One of these nights. ..........and many more...LOL

However I'll try those progressions and substitutions of yours......

midi files sounds interesting . One of these days I want to get hold of a 4 track and just let the music go wherever it wants . I never really studied music the way many pros do but I find it to be some sort of creative outlet where I can do whatever I want and who cares kinda thing . I know there are plenty of tabs out there so to get songs sounding the way they were written but my goal is to be creative .Guitar is just so technical and no matter how hard you try if you aint got the gear it just don't sound the same as some guy playing on some very expensive stuff . Too bad we don't live close enough to exchange ideas , that would be interesting .

edited to add ---- Do you guys or gals Yahoo ? if so, maybe we can get a room and just goof around some ....

    Thanks, me too.

Have you tried band in a box.

Intresting that you would mention one of these nights.I just learned that one the other night along with I can't tell you why. Man the Eagles are the best. Chicago is another favorite group of mine.

I've played all around DFW area. But, I stopped gigging about 6 months ago. I'm about ready to
get back into it though. Believe me the bandstand is the best teacher. I also produce other people, acts
    singers etc.

I teach music theory along with piano and also give voice lessons as well.

What fake books are you guys using. I always try to have the songs remembered without relying on one. But somtimes you just don't have a choice. If someone calls out a request you have to be ready to play just about anything (within reason of course).
