What is a poppy? This is a custom I'm not familiar with, being a dumb murrikin.
Don't Americans wear poppies on Rememberance Day??? After John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields was published in 1915 the poppy became a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle. Three years later an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield.
During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame Guerin, learned of the custom. On her return to France she decided to use handmade poppies to raise money for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country. In November, 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada. -

Some Americans still wear the poppy.
The custom is not as popular as it once was a long time ago.

Thanks Mary, I knew, but not how it all started.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.(Taken from "Welcome to Flanders Fields", by Daniel G. Dancocks, McClelland and Stewart (Toronto, Canada), 1988)

Maybe its the line about the CROSSes that is offensive - is it ok to honour their dead from the war in various publications, estate collections, growing counts.....

These men were Fools(Bro idiot etc). Its not even honoring the Dead so much as appreciating and respecting the sacrifices made .I wore one with Pride this Week for the first time.I was also in a large Tesco Petrol Station at 11:00 and was pleasantly surprised how everyone stood still and silent for 2 Minutes.
I even did a thread on wearing a poppy...but no-one replied

I honestly never heard of this custom....interesting isn't it? On a funny note, I have gone to meetings wearing red, white, and blue on both Election Day and the Fourth of July without even realizing it. Damn color coordination! *grin*
