Kathy,Hi!!
First of all, I didn't leave Jehovah's org. I disfellowshipped
them. I took Jehovah with me. I started studying in Hebrew and Greek
and found that so many JW doctrines were based on scripture translation errors, I was shocked. When you read the Bible as it is
really written you don't recognize it. It is a real book of poetry, and actually makes sense. If anyone wants a list of translation errors and the references to check for themselves I will be happy to
make a list. Spin

Dear Spinner,
I would be interested in such a list! That sounds very interesting. Talk to you again later.

I would say that for me it was this......The WTBS sets itself up as mediator between God and man....thereby assuming the role of Christ. By teaching that to be a true Christian you MUST be a JW....i.e. part of the organization....and that if you leave their organization you leave God....they have become your self-appointed messiah! I also couldn't deal with the fact that I had no freedom to express my thoughts or opinions...I didn't have the freedom to disagree....it's relgious communism at its finest...

Hi Kathy,
My breaking point was when I saw the doctine/teaching that we were Christians, but yet we followed none of Christ's teachings. We followed mostly the mosiac laws and pretended Jesus never was crusified for our sins. The fact that all I ever heard was Jehovah this, and Jehovah that, and then was taught to turn around and say that we were persecuted on account of Jesus' name prooved to be a crock of shit. I noticed little things such as the "society" would capitalize the word "Society", but yet use lower case letters when they referred to God's "holy spirit". Those little things were very obvious to me. Then I started to see that JWs could be handed over to satan for following the examples of Jesus, as set forth in the Bible. I left for the reason that I could not continue to try and serve two masters. I was going crazy trying to. The disfellowshipping practice bothered me greatly. I could see that it went against EVERYTHING that the gospel books of Jesus were about,as soylibri said. An incorperated business was self-appionting themselves the role of Christ. Except they were doing a real Pharisutical ( is that a word? If not, replace it with "shitty" ) job of it. And we were never "hated" on account of Jesus' name as Jehovah's Witnesses, as claimed.
peace,
somebodyedited because I keep adding stuff!

Hi Kathy, I think some of our experiences are not very useful to your boyfriends sister. I don't think my story would help much. My husband and I basically saw thru it (after 10 long years). Being in a church like the Jehovah's Witnesses, is like being semi asleep. Your boyfriends sister is already nodding off, accepting their word as true, and from now on she'll attempt to shut out anything that will threaten to wake her up. Try speaking to her from your heart and telling her how much you admire and care about her and how you are terribly afraid that she is only seeing one side of the story. Beg her to get some other viewpoints from non JWs . Ask her if she had a hundred thousand dollars would she give it to someone to invest without thorougly researching the bad things that have been said of that persons investment abilities? Or would she trust her own instincts and hand the money over. Many people have lost moneythat way!! Tell her her life is worth more than a hundred thousand dollars, and therefore she needs to hear what informed people have to say about Jehovah's Witnesses.
Ask her if she wants to join a church that stops families from being together. I left the WTS 20 yrs ago because I stopped believing it was true. I have been disowned by my family for leaving the church - TWENTY LONG YEARS. Ask her does that sound right to her? Tell her to look for a religion that really does emphasis love - not one that defines love by how much you obey what they say!
So sorry for your plight. Also sorry if too many of us have given you too many leads to follow. The problem is that there is sooooooooooo much wrong with the Jehovah's Witnesses, it's hard to know where to start first. THE AGONY OF CHOICE!!! There is a movie on video called Holy Smoke. It stars Kate Windslett and Harvey Kitell. It's about a family in your situation. The movie is a bit bizarre - but it does illustrate well how "off the planet" or "out of it" a young woman becomes after joining a cult. Your boyfriends sister might not think she is getting involved in a cult - but the JWs do fit the criteria of a cult religion. You and your boy freind might like to borrow the movie and assess it's usefulness in your situation. (it's a funny movie - not a serious slog by any means)

Hi Kathy,
I guess my answer would qualify under "social issues."
I was "selectively" DF'd under very questionable circumstances.
Subsequent to that I began to find out much "dirt" on the WTS.
I guess you can say it was downhill from there.Boozy

The 607 thing. But that doesn't work for just anybody.
If she really wants to believe in the Bible, then you're probably not going to rescue her with much ease, because JWs have appealing answers to many objections. I myself make it a semi regular practice to go into anti-JW chat rooms run by Protestant fundies and tie them all up in knots by defending JW doctrines on issues like the Trinity, 144,000, spiritual resurrection, and so forth.
If she's not too hardcore about taking the Bible so literally, and if you aren't, then you can take that angle and try to show how JW ideas of inherited imperfection and the 1000 year reign are just plain silly.
Good fortune.

G'day Kathy,
If I could add to Waiting's point that "the WTBTS says they are the most - the only - truly united people on the earth. United in what? In their teachings. Ok, but did Jesus preach that as the only - or even primary - sign of his followers?'" and that is this comment I heard some years ago:
"Conformity is the sign of a cult"
You see the Witnesses proclaim their unity which in practice is uniformity or more correctly conformity. Just think of all the many procedures and schedules that the Witnesses are so proud of being the same "no matter which country you go to". That's fine to a point. But it's all part of this strict central control. Hence they have not just unity but conformity. A cult.
Cheers,

Hi Pat,
Sorry to bust your bubble but dinosaurs DO NOT pre-date humans. The bible says ALL land animals were created on the sixth day. And no, they did not always eat meat. The bible says humans and all animals were created to eat veggatation. You said ALL "scientific sources" teach this. Try again. Visit www.answersingenesis.org. JWs are wrong, not the Bible. Dinosaurs were created the same day as Adam and Eve, just as the Bible says. Dinosaurs were also on Noah's Ark, and dinosaurs are even mentioned in the Bible. Read Job 40&41.
Now many Bible foot notes say these animals were a hippotimus or an crocodile. But is a crocodile a fire breathing dragon too powerful to overtake? Does a hippo have a tail like a cedar tree? Honestly.
There is much more evidence to support the biblical view of creation than there is for evolutionary dogma.
I don't mean to be rude in the least but I find it humorous that you would use "Dinosaur" as a source of real history over the Word of God. It didn't even get the evolutionary view right, let alone the biblical one!
Jason.

a few things helped my light get brighter...
1. 7 failed prophecies. Count them...seven. If not more. And not some Witnesses, as they claim. the GB.
2. Blood doctrine. Not in the Bible. Not in there. Period.
3. Shunning. Not in the Bible. Not in there. Period.
4. The Malawi fiasco. Over a lousy .25 cent tax. God Almighty...
5. The GB says they were persecuted in the US for refusing military service. Liars. They wouldn't do alternative service. That's the truth.
I could go on forever. Almost everybody on this board could. I hope that's a beginning. There are tricks to getting someone out, I know a few, and others know a few. I had four kids 'inside' and all but one are out, and that last one is over halfway out. It can be done.
By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.
