    Euph,

I agree - the numbers seemed a little low. Especially compared to the $1 billion reported recently by Brooklyn HQ, a number disproportionately higher that we would expect just scaling for publishers. There appear to be two possibilities to account for this:

    • Actual revenues in France are higher, but the Society knew people would work the number backward, so they intentionally gave modest figures.
    • The France revenues are more or less as we have calculated, but a significant portion are forwarded to Brooklyn. Since HQ receives monies from various branches, their revenue is disproportionately higher than the rest of the world.

I bet the French are going to resent selling their freedom to that damnably corrupt EU Court of Human Rights, huh?

    Blondie,

As to the time period you may be right, although some kind of automatic prescription might have been applied too (in France a tax control normally doesn't look back over 5 years).

One technical problem is that the 60 % law normally applies to donations between non-related individuals. Its application to an association as an artificial person seems to be unprecedented. See http://www.geocities.com/droit_tj/actujuri.htm (n.b. it's a pro-JW site).

    Czar,

It depends how the European Court judges. And this, in turn, also depends on how it will handle the continual pro-cult pressure of the US State Department...

I'm disappointed that nothing has been said about penalties incurred ( including interest). Originally, we were

hoping this would be an enormous sum.

Just my personal observations but does france seem to be turning against all religions and cults? I know they've been burned a few times in the last decade or so but they really seem to be turning up the heat on all religions. Maybe I'm just getting it wrong but it seem that way to me!

Maybe it's the begining of armegedon? ;-)

    Metatron,

About half of the 45 million euros which are presently claimed to the French WT is made up of penalties and interests.

There is no particular attack on religions and cults in general, nor even on JWs whose public activities are going on unhindered. This is a specific fiscal issue, even though anti-cult leagues (political or otherwise) have applauded to the French decision for their own reasons -- as could be expected.
