Ak Jeff: I know that many here would place Jehovah's witnesses on a list of 'cults'. Personally I don't think they meet all the standard definition - but would class them as an 'authoritarian sectarian movement'.

    I disagree.

The JWs are the epitomy of a cult.

    • Cults reject all paradoxes of scripture.
    • Cults reject anything they cannot explain.
    • Cults use the Bible-plus
    • Cults recongnize a man or a group as having absolute autority.
    • Cults deny salvation by faith alone
    • Cult leaders do not want their follower to think for themselves.
    • Cultist make it difficult to leave the Organization.

I personally witness to as many Jws as possible, however its my belief Jws really do not want to study. Much like the Mormons if they sense any "Biblical knowledge" or a threat to counter their presentation they will cut short the Bible er, um, book study.

Last year I gave gift certificates to all my neighbors and included a note about my prior involvment with the Nit-Witnesses. I had some nice, simple discussions about the JW's during the coarse of the next few months. I understand, as relayed to my daughter from her active JW mother, I have "poisoned" the whole block and the territory card has a notation on it to not work this street. My neighbors are very happy with me for doing this, (plus they like the gifts). I gave out gifts to them this year as well, nice people!

If all ex witnesses did something like this we could really save a lot of potential victims. Almost everyone knows a JW or has one in the family somewhere.

I think that there's a more classical psychological profile perspective that Ak Jeff might be coming from. In which there is only one leader, instead of several members of a Governing Body--like Jim Jones or David Koresh. Everything centers around one god-like leader. The JWs have many traits of cults and could be called one but it doesn't have that one guy on top. It's been awhile since I took that social psychology class that covered cults but I do remember that JWs didn't fit the profile to a T....came pretty close though.

There are many "threats to my neighbors" out there, such as the JWs, Mormons, Moonies, Master Card and the Republican Party. Am I going to make an effort to "protect" them from all these threats and go totally batty in the process? (The answer is no.)

Once again, Brad, you have expanded my view by adding perspective to the JW's as not being the be all and end all to the World...........it's tough to think that as insidious as they are, as messed up as they are, they are part of a larger group or mindset in the World........(loved how you included the Republican Party, Brad!) So, I do a bit here and there, but I don't make it my all encompassing goal or focus in my life. When the conversation comes around to JW's, I am honest about what being a part of them for twenty-five years did to my life, and, I inform them that in my opinion they are a cult, but, I then drop it. I feel the best thing I can do is to just live my life as a triumph each and every day and move on from the fixation and negativity of the past. Spread the positive and bury the negative. Peace Out, Terri

I would wish the Borg had nothing to do with me but whilst ever I have family as borgites, then I'm interested in them! Yes, Mrs Ozzie and I have a very full life that has nothing whatsoever to do with the borg - far, far from it!

But we have played our part and will continue to help people see the truth about "the Troof". For example, try this: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/8/81953/1.ashx

cheers, Ozzie (true freedom lovers class)

you can make anything meet the requirements if you make the list of requirements yourself. that's the very same thing the WTS does: the true religion must include this, this and that - we do this, this and that, so we are the true religion.

    Hi Jeff,

I know that you and I are busy at another ex-JW board besides this one, so we are doing what we can.

you can make anything meet the requirements if you make the list of requirements yourself. that's the very same thing the WTS does: the true religion must include this, this and that - we do this, this and that, so we are the true religion. The quoted "list" are seven marks of a cult. To consider them as requirements is irrelevent. The witnesses do the cited items that identify a cult. The simple fact the WT uses the Bible-plus is a huge red flag. The WT mag. has just as much authority as the NWT Bible. (or any Bible) And it is proclaimed by the WT the only way the Bible is understood is by their interpretation. Memebers have to acknowledge the complete authority of Brooklyn or be thrown out of the group. Memebers cannot converse with outsiders about their group or discuss Biblical issues without first looking to the WT for a correct response.

those items don't identify a cult, they simply identify another religious belief. it's like saying: one mark of a cult is claiming the trinity to be a false teaching. "cults deny salvation by faith alone" makes it obvious that this list is not about marking cults, but leading the reader simply to a different belief system.
