My nephew's pentecostal dad & stepmom are always pushing my (very secular) sister to let them homeschool him. Their motives couldn't be more transparent, they don't give a rat's ass whether or not he gets the decent education and diverse environment that he gets in public school. All they want to do is feed him religion 24/7 to ensure that he grows up to be a good fundy drone just like they are, reading Left Behind books, gulping every tidbit from the right-wing propaganda machine, watching TV preachers and waiting for the rapture that's coming real soon now.
Homeschooling?

Maybe it's home schooling, maybe not, but has anyone else noticed how many JWs have such poor reading skills? Listening to them read at bookstudy is like listening to G.W. Bush speak; words are mispronounced, omitted, or mumbled. And I've seen others' lips moving as they read along...

Well, my mom tried that with me and it didn't work. While I agree school is where you develope your social skills I was raised a JW so...either way I wasn't encouraged to socialize. As a kid I was relieved I didn't have to be the JW kid at school anymore but my education suffered for it. You can overcome it- I got a GED and went to college and graduate school....but it depends on how motivated you are to set things straight I guess.

I encourage home schooling IF the parent(s) are prepared. Unlike some of the teachers in public school.
There are many students from public schools that can barely read/write when they "graduate", so what's up with that? Put them to working in fast food restaurants where they cannot even count change back to the customer without looking at the register to tell them how much, etc.
I think too many parents fail their children when it comes to education...not just JW's.
In this area there is a lot of homeschooling going on, and some children surpass the standards demanded from the public institution, so there are various factors to consider when homeschooling.
I'd think, such as the parents mentioned in the original post, are perhaps lazy by nature. So they can just pass that non-motivation onto the kids. It's a crying shame, alright.
Why do our children always have to suffer because of ignorant parents? Damn.

Over 100,000 families homeschool their kids in the UK - and I'm one of them!
Because it might not work for some doesn't mean others can't achieve a high standard of education. I belong to a Homeschooling list and there are many children that go on to university. I know this thread is particularly earmarked at JW children, but I thought I'd step in because it CAN work. It all depends on the dedication of the parents and the child's willingness to learn. Dominic just wasn't happy at school, even though he was doing well education-wise. I don't regret having him at home and he's working towards going to college!

I'm sure it can work in some cases but it's not my experience that it does in the long term.
I have an anxious son who finds school difficult in the social sense but is extremely intelligent.
Instead of taking him out of school we took him to a psychiatrist to teach him to cope with his anxietys and it has worked. He will always in life come across difficult situations and problems and we all find other people hard to deal with at times so we give him extra support and encouragement but do not let him get out of the difficult situation.
The doc says that for some people life is like one big roller coaster ride. If you hold on and stay on the ride EVENTUALLY with support and encouragement, and training, a person will learn that there is nothing to fear and it becomes much less of a struggle.
As for not going to school to avoid bad associations, I have never seen that work once.
The lives of these people are messed up seriously and all that I have known are either disass'd, disfell. or faded.
JW's are the worst associated to have.

I agree wholeheartedly
I think this was one of the worse things I ever did. Homeschooling my oldest son from 9th grade on. It was a disaster, and during that time his brother (my son) was killed in an auto accident. It totally left my son and I without the willpower to complete his high school education. He finally did get his GED under his own power. But is sickening mistake I wish I had never made. Of course my ex-husband and father of my kids insisted I home school him back then. I was taking care of my elderly mother, had a home sewing business and I had no business homeschooling. My son assures me it is ok, but I know I failed him because of allowing myself to get talked into homeschooling.
Because of my home schooling, I had a JW friend of mine start homeschool her two sons. They never attended public school ever. The oldest one graduated, but are so socially stunted that is terrible. The parents are not well balanced anyway and both the boys are really mentally emotionally crippled by this homeschooling. And of course they have been aux pioneering as soon as they could drive. Poor kids.
