Get rich quick scheme mentality

I was thinking about how many JWs were into the "get rich quick" schemes. There were many brothers and sisters who went into the pyramid type schemes involving everything from "magnet therapy" to "Mallaluca" to "amway" then there was some perfume knockoff home sales, home gym sales, etc. The lists go on and on.

I am not criticizing anyone that ends up being succesful in any home based business but merely pointing out how many JWs I knew that were involved in them. Or the people who went and took 2 classes and thought they could repair computers, or the guy who thought 6 week truck driving school would lead to him working part time and making 100k a year.

I think it's part of the mentality that leads you to also believe in the carrot of the "new system" ... here put in a little effort and get a big reward. You don't have to go to University and spend 4-6 years of your life, here do this and you'll make big money. You don't have to work full-time, you can work part-time and make big money. You don't have to make a difference in this world, you just have to this, this, and this and you are guaranteed a perfect wonderful life in a paradise.

It seems this type of person spends more time trying to get out of investing time and money in education and a real career, than someone that just goes out and does their time and works hard and buys themself a new house, etc. Then anyone that does go out and actually busts thier butt and makes it, ends up becoming "materialistic" but I do believe most of them are materialistic, they are waiting for the BIG SCORE.

Amen to all you said TickledPink.

I agree. I too was one who was taken in by MLM.......twice for christ sake!!!

. I did Amway and Symmetry. To be honest....being a dub is the perfect religion for this buisness because of the desire to have money and a "supposed" amount of free time on your hands with this buisness.....and for the reasons you already mentioned. Since dubs are a closed group....they share anything they think is a winner with 'the friends'. In my town with "Symmetry", the dubs made most of the companies team.

I was DFed and attending all the (buisness) meetings with dubs who could now talk to me because it was "buisness related". These dubs became more zealous for this buisness than they were for the truth'' at times. Many of them made good money......for awhile. Most are now back doing what they did before joining a Multi Level Marketing group because of the fact that the majority of these buisnesses only last a short time.

Your absolutely correct though......dubs LOVE this stuff regardless of the amount of bad exposer the Watchtower gives regarding "get rich schemes".

Alot of the problem comes from being susceptible or too trusting of their brothers or sisters. The Mormons have the same problem with Utah having the highest level of fraud and scams of all of the states..why..because the Mormons just like the dubs are prone to trust their brothers and sisters and are willing to invest both money and time into things that they usually would never even consider.

I fell into the trap and got involved in Melaleuka for a time..or however you spell it.

I'm sure in this regard, JWs as much as many other types of people fall for the same 'get rich quick schemes'. This is not in any way, shape, or form, confined to the JW realm.

To be truthful, in all the assemblies I've to lately they've been warning the R&F about these schemes. So, the few that fall for these schemes well deserve to lose their money for being greedy.

I am certainly not rich, but am involved in MLM (not pyramid, by the way...............old setups for those businesses). When I started, I was a JW, and our contacts were incredibly vast. Word spreads with JW's, when you have a hot product. We had several and I did really well, for a long time. I've been in this business for over 10 years. I do not feel that they are scams, but there certainly are irreputable people who will promise you the moon for very little work. To be successful, you definitely have to work at it and I did for several years to get a base in my organization. Now I just collect the checks, and they are good ones.

Since we left the JW's, I've lost most of my JW downline, but still have a few in my downline who are JW's, but they aren't doing much, just buying a few products from time to time. I don't actively recruit anymore, or go to their meetings. It's not Amway, by the way.

I wanted to add that I had no intention of getting involved in this business. I only signed on to buy the product I wanted at wholesale. Word spread that I could get the products wholesale, and I had phone calls from JW's all over the place. It just took off and developed a life of it's own, and I couldn't NOT do it as a business at that point. Right place, right time.

Mulan...... I worked 4 down from a girl I worked in the same store with who became a millionair with Symmetry. Her close downline and her upline made big bucks.....real big. Some of those are still prospering in the buisness....so as you say, those who really work MLM and type buisnesses can certainly be succesfull. You have to be cut out for this type of thing as is true with many things.

My daughter and son-in-law STILL recieve commisions and they no longer work the buisness. Customers still use the products but those working the buisness are scarce. They(my daughter and her hubby), also received $10,000 and a trip to the Carribean when they first started for the amount of sales they generated when they first started in the buisness. I could go on and on but I won't.

DY, the dubs have been warning against such buisnesses and putting it in a negative light for many many years....trust me. Even dubs break dub rules if they think some quick cash can be made. .....cuz their just like they daddy leaders.

Biggest check I ever got was $8000, and I won a trip to Hawaii in 1995, based on my sales and my group's performance. That was neat.

K....one last thing. Had I been the one who got the hotshot in who became the millionaire in the buisness.....I'd be in Hawaii as we speak!
