From a non JW perspective: Older children are usually groomed through High School for a preparation for their future. They are encouraged to choose a profession of which they will excel and pursue the foundation of a future career through college training and education.

Jehovahs witnesses ( to my eternal criticizsm of the faith) deny this thinking and pursuit from their young people. It is substituted with "preaching" and " jehovahs work comes first". Naturally the child wants to "please" and will follow whatever direction is mandated from parents. Some kids rebel ( and with good cause).

What a stupendous waste of opportunity for all those young ones caught in the " theocratic trap".

I was one of them. I am lucky to be where I am now.

I remember a few years ago it seemed like every JW was pushing this new phone company. I can't recall the name but it was basically trying to get to switch from AT&T or Sprint to their company. Anyway, this one "brother" got so pissed with me because I wouldn't switch (I was happy with what I had) and because I wouldn't help him get the large company I worked for switched to his phone company.

Brother love is one thing, but even with JW's, cash is king.

And it certainly wasn't new. C.T.Russell apparently wanted to capitalize of the religious cereal craze. Why should Bible Students be wasting their money with Kellogg's and Post? Think of all that money going to their Adventist competitors! The Watchtower sponsors Miracle Wheat!

Alot of the problem comes from being susceptible or too trusting of their brothers or sisters. The Mormons have the same problem with Utah having the highest level of fraud and scams of all of the states..why..because the Mormons just like the dubs are prone to trust their brothers and sisters and are willing to invest both money and time into things that they usually would never even consider.

Nova's General Store comes to mind. In the early 80's this MLM scam started up in Utah. I know several JWs involved in it, including my own family.

But the salamander letter was probably the biggest and most deadly scam in Mormon history. True, the man who made the forged letter was very clever in his art (but a terrible explosives expert), but the gullibility of church leaders because of their zealous desire to cover up anything that might tend to discredit the church's early beginnings certainly play a large part.

Hofmann claimed that the letter was authentic, and he proved it by comparing it with the farmer's handwriting in the back of an old prayer book. Christensen had then purchased the controversial letter to donate to the church, where the elders would keep it in the vault reserved for what many believed were the church's great secrets.

That zealous desire to cover up anything that might tend to discredit the church's early beginnings applies to JWs too. It is a wonder that the Watchtower hasn't been scammed big time. Maybe they have, but it has been hushed up.

It would be just desserts, since then they have been perpetrating one of the biggest pyramid schemes of all time. 1914.

For so many witnesses, they have no education, and no real chance of making any significant money, so these businesses are attractive to them, as start up costs are usually very minimal.

Some of these MLM type companies are legit ways of making money, and will work if someone is dedicated to making them work. Too often people treat them like a hobby, and therefore the money is hobby level income.

I do not fault witnesses, or anyone else who wants to do better for themselves. Just make sure it is legit, and don't alienate your friends and family while doing it.

The main MLM phone service was Excel. I knew lots of people who got into that one. Personally I could never see a benefit from it. I got cheaper service through my AT&T service.
