Smokers: Non-Smoker Seeks Xmas Advice

I am trying to find a nice cigarette lighter for my husband for Xmas. I thought it would make a great stocking stuffer surprise. Currently he is using matches, a cheapo convenience store lighter, or the cig lighter in our car. Yesterday he actually resorted to the long stemmed fireplace lighter that we also use to light the BBQ.

So I have been to several stores in our town, and even called a local discount cigarette shop, but very few places carry lighters nice enough to make good gifts. (I'm not talking the BIC .79 cent kind; something in the $50-$75 range). Wal-Mart had a small selection of Zippo lighters, but I was hoping to find one of those laser lighters that are supposed to light even in the wind, since he is outdoors a lot. Are they any good? On the Internet I saw a huge array of brands, and I don't know one brand from another. Anybody know what are the best brands?

It is almost too late to order online. Here I thought this would be a nice quick item to shop for, but it is turning out to be anything but that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Collibri, who also make wonderful writing instruments, also put out a good line of lighters. I would think the best place to look is a local, high end smoke shop, one that specializes in cigars, you might find one in a mall in your area. Tobbacco is making a huge come back.

Tobbacco is making a huge come back.

That's why I was so surprised that Fred Meyer (a big chain here in NW that advertises one-stop shopping) didn't have anything but the cheapo's. They had every brand of cigarettes imanginable for sale, though.

    The coolest lighters are ZIPPO's!!!

prophecor, I have had Collibris before and it really depends on which one you get. The only probs I had with them has been the small lever that holds down the top of the lighter...the spring came out of it and now the top flops around. The other thing too is if it breaks you have to ship it to them and it is alomst not worth it. My advice would be to get him a good zippo and maybe have something engraved on it like his initials. Easeir than the butane ones as well.

Ciggarettes cheaper stores have a good selection. Or find a good tobbaconist shop nearby. If you let me know near where you live i can reccomend one in OR. Also antique stores often have very cool old zippo'z etc. Drop me a line if ya want

    Good suggestions, thank you!

    I live in Salem, OR.

I am looking up Colibri's and there are so many kinds. The only place that had Zippos was the Wal-Mart, but the selection was limited. It's always my fallback plan if I can't find a place with better selection.

Do you know anything about the wind-resistant models? He is outdoors a lot.

also another small issue w/Colibris is the small heating element that ignites the flame. It is rather delicate and easy to break off. I do like the waterproof action though..especially when fishing a stream..ahem *cough*...Not that I have ever dropped anything in the water that is..

Irregardless of the brand, I would suggest the butane "torch" type. The are truly windproof, just don't get it too close to the eyebrows/eyelashes.
