Do you really believe his name is Jehovah?

Good to see you again, Will Power. Us "apostate" ladies need to stick together. Also, the "J" sound does not exist in ancient Hebrew, so the earliest pronunciation would never have been Jehovah. Which is more insulting, to call my dad "dad" or "Joe", or even worse, mispronounce his name "Yo"? To call him by his title is a sign of respect for his position. A nice summary of the problems with the name "Jehovah":

I am sure the only reason the WTBTS clings to the name is to further mark themselves as different than the rest of us, and further alienate their members from regular people. To banish birthdays and declare that the cross was a stake are similarly very weak arguments. Funny, if you try and engage a JW apologist on these issues, they will claim that they are minor and unimportant. Well, if they are minor, unimportant, and wrong, why not abandon them?

    Hi back ((( jgnat )))

Well, if they are minor, unimportant, and wrong, why not abandon them?

AND, why aren't they able to intelligently discuss the matters without getting red faced fired up, err, I'll have to get back to you,

or USE anyone's questioning as a way to JUDGE whether you are worthy of paradise? which translates to YOU ARE NOT ONE OF US

Hugs right back, (( Will Power.))

which translates to YOU ARE NOT ONE OF US

A very fine summary of the problem. They hang on to their weirdness because they have to. Because if they don't their whole doctrinal house of cards comes crashing down. If the FDS is wrong about these minor matters, could it be they DON'T have a direct line to Jehovah?

    I concur,

With the Bible there was certainly no effort to condense or be brief. There is MUCH detail about NOTHING. Geneologies, obscure ramblings, a tendency to be WORDY on very mundane matters (at least from a modern perspective), and repitition.

Why the hell couldn't something something as IMPORTANT (as claimed by the Dubs) as the divine name be clarified- ONE SENTENCE stating clearly in a traceable tongue, for people of all ages to look at and say,"Yup "God" said my name is _____ says so right there, and it says that is the most important thing in the world." I've said the same thing about the "trinity", just one sentence loud and clear and put the issue to rest for eternity! Certainly the "creator" knew Hebrew had no vowels and that in the future all modern languages would and this would pose a problem. Certainly He could have made ABUNDANT archaeological stuff available to make such a "cornerstone" belief proveable beyond a shadow of doubt- irrefutable!

Yet there is abundant time spent discussing LOVE, defining what it is and isn't. Illustrations of how it should be displayed etc. There is more DIRECT counsel on bodily fluids than on some of these so-called "cornerstone" beliefs (blood, holidays, neutrality, ecclesiastical hierarchy etc.)

The Bible is a BIG book and "God" seems to have an aversion to being clear, concise and to the point on some things. Could it be those things AREN'T THAT IMPORTANT to Him and the things that are elaborated ARE?

Once again the culprit is organized religion and it's never ending attempts to control people!

Jgnat: I guess it would depend on whether his name was Joe or not. If his name was Frank he probably wouldn't answer and might be insulted! (I just couldn't resist...)

Interesting and excellent point! With all the space wasted on excruciating details, a good, understandable pronunciation guide to god's name would make a lot of sense. To me, a lot less ambiguous than that "I AM" foolishness. I know that was supposed to be meaningful to the superstitious nomadic goat-herders and they (probably) got it, but what about for future generations? Wasn't some so-called omniscience involved here? Seems like an all-knowing entity would have taken that into consideration..

As soon as one starts using some open-minded thinking, all this starts to take on an air of superstitious tall-tale-telling.

"God" said my name is _____ says so right there

HE DID! He said his name was JEALOUS. Ex 34:14

SIDEBAR: if you look up Ja' HOVAH in Strong's Concordance (you can do that at any library or on-line) Word 1943 - it means MISCHIEF. I'd say quite fitting a choice for the name they picked to spearhead all the lies, broken families, broken spirits.

The JW's are not the only ones that believe that Jehovah is the correct pronounciation. That doesn't mean that is the right way to say it.

I still have a problem with the whole idea of calling God by his name. I feel as though it might be inappropriate. Think abou this: Do you call a judge by his first name? How about people that deserve respect? In school we didn't call the teachers by their first name. We still probably say yes sir, to a cop, or a superior officer in the military.

How is it that the creator of the universe shouldn't demand the same respect? How about Lord, or, here is an idea, how about, God?

    Brooke, you said it all...

if Indiana Jones said it; it must be true! I do believe every word he says! And he knows all about the Ark of the Covenant; also how best effectively to fight Nazis ( wonder if those methods would work on the JWs?).

    chuckle, Frank
