Have you noticed an oddity at indoor conventions?

It all depends on the JWs in charge, I imagine. The local JWs - when using public facilities for social gatherings - have taken it upon themselves to cover fixtures in the building that were considered to be idolatrous. One building in particular had a cross hanging on the wall, and extraordinary measures were taken to ensure that it was covered up during the JW gathering. Similar extraordinary measures were taken to hide said cross when it fell off the wall during the gathering and broke on the floor. There were JWs who were terrified to even touch the cross after they broke it, fearing that they may pollute themselves spiritually by touching the "idol".

A more superstitious bunch has never been seen. LOL

Funny, up here in Canada I can't remember an american flag displayed at any of the conventions. We do, however, have prominent banners of our hockey divisional championships.

As a sideline, undercover, the funeral homes up here have to cater to all kinds of faiths and non-faiths. I noticed they had an ingenious set-up of multi-layered curtains, with the cross on the back wall. They could easily adjust the decor based on the beliefs of the decedant. I notice that each culture has their own way. The asian flower arrangements are very different from our North American ones, many of them have ribbons with poetry on them.

Sadly, I go to more funerals now. Is this what happens when we get older?

P.S. I just remembered the back wall was painted with a lovely pastoral scene, perfect for a JW funeral. But I do remember the cross could be easily covered up.

The Pacific Colliseum where we had our assemblies didn't have any flags, however we did have courtside ads for the Molson Indy and Player's Light Cigarettes prominantly advertised. The Vancouver Canucks haven't won enough titles to qualify any glorious banner display though

I asked once and was told that the flags at the convention site were the responsibility of the owner/manager.

My grandparents were Bible Students (pre-1931 JWs) and met in rented facilities that had flags, Oddfellows, Kiawanis, etc. They never moved or hid the flags. Even now when JWs rent the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) hall or the town hall for a wedding reception, they don't take down the flags.

Except for a few "sensitive" JWs even the crosses in the hospital rooms stay on the wall.

Hey, we use money with these symbols on it:

    Pyramids

    Eye

    "In God We Trust"

Yep, always noticed the flags. Never really question the orthodox JW position that since they're put there by the facility owner, we can't take them down.

I am fairly certain there is no such statute. It would be a blatant violation of the First Amendment.

Yes, I've noticed flags as well.

Worse, we usually have our conventions at a place called the 'War memorial Center' , I always found that quite peculiar.

Now, they are building a huge convention center inside a local casino. I know that JW's are talking about it, and wondering if our future conventions will be held there, because it would be so much closer to home. I'm really curious as to wether they will be going for it or not.

When I was in NY, ours was at the Veterans' Memorial Colisseum.

Of course, despite the name, it was really just another sports stadium, home to hockey games, rock concerts, etc.
