Well, I started with Tolkein, and it pretty much spoiled me for most everything else. Except:

    • Terry Pratchett
    • Tim Powers
    • Harlan Ellison
    • The Anvil of the World, Kage Baker
    • Black Air, Lucius Shepherd (novella)
    • And I am partial to the Planet of Adventure series and The Last Castle, both by Jack Vance.

Terry Pratchett is unbeatable. Humor, satire, fantasy, mystery... he does it all. An amazing author.

My favorite group of books in the Discworld series is the books about Death. Who knew the anthropomorphic personification of the Alpha and the Omega was a nice fellow who loves and cares for stray kittens, enjoys going out for a curry, and enjoys a good cup of camomile tea?

Then there's "Faerie Tale" by Raymond Feist-spoooky.

Not so much fantasy, but still one of the best books I've read in a long time "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman- Excellent!

Damn you all. When I read the title of this thread I thought it would have to do with Chinese chicks frolicking naked through waterfalls or something.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Tolkien. Anybody heard of him?

I also like Terry Prathcett's Discworld novels. Haven't read a lot of pure fantasy other than those two.

IPSec: John Carter/Mars novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs - interesting for girls as well.

Funky Derek: GentlyFeral: Well, I started with Tolkein

I like to read books from: Julian May (except the trilium's) - Anne Gaffrey - Mercedes Lackey - Feist - Greg Bear - Frank Herbert (Dune - The Santaroga Barrier) in fact, when I should name all the books and writers, you would never finish reading my post - much to boring..... this post I mean, not the books.....

Like I said Mungobaobab - '''ONCE'' is a good read - fairies AND sex, and ''NOBODY TRUE'', also by James Herbert - sex again, this time with stiffs (dead peeps) - so something for everyone

Lucius Shepherd Shepard didn't write "Black Air." Kim Stanley Robinson did that, and it's rather unlike the rest of his work.

Lucius Shepard wrote ... dammit, a lot of stories I don't remember clearly. But he's definitely worth a trial, I promise.

    And how could I forget:

    • Jack Vance
    • R. A. Lafferty
    • J. G. Ballard (how could you not love a title like Myths of the Near Future?)
    • John Crowley (Engine Summer!)
    • Terry Bisson (Bears Discover Fire)
    • Suzy McKee Charnas (The Vampire Tapestries!)

    edited to add:

    • Avram Davidson: look out for two stories: "Bumberboom" and "My boy friend's name is Jello"
    • And his wife, Grania Davis, author of a knife-edged story called "Young Love"
    • Tanith Lee
    • James Tiptree, Jr.
