Well, a Chinese toolmaker makes oh, about a dollar a day. My guys make anywhere from $18.00 to $25.00 an hour plus benefits. Nothing steller but a decent living. Now multiply this problem nationwide and you see the problem. Good paying, manufacturing jobs are leaving the U.S. faster then you can blink. So when I go out of business and my toolmaker who makes $22.00 an hour is out of a job, what will he need to do? Since there aren't any manufacturing jobs left, he's going to have to work during the day at Wal-Mart making $8.00 an hour and at night at some trucking firm (making $8.00 an hour) unloading Chinese made goods. He'll then spend his money at Wal-Mart because it will be the cheapest place to shop and that's all he can afford to buy...cheap Chinese made goods. The irony kills me.

That's the thing, we don't have a monopoly on toolmaking anymore. We need to start encouraging our youth to go into fields that aren't yet employed by the Chineese in order to be the manufacturing powerhouse we used to be. Either that or start looking for niche markets, like in your toolmaking case, making tools that have titanium alloys or making them with special shapes.

Mr. Bush has been hollering about the crisis in Social Security since his failed run for congress in 1978. Sure, it needs some adjustments, but the reported crisis is quite simply overblown.

Coon- a lot of people besides just Mr. Bush have been hollering about the crisis for many years- including Bill Clinton when he was in office. Thing is, people were talking about it then. It's time to actually do something about it.

    Roybatty- excellent post!

ColdRedRain: Your arguments are bizzarre to say the least !

Claiming that having to work additional jobs to get fed is a good thing and bragging about the extra jobs created doesn't make sense.

Put the facts together and you get the reality of people having to take on extra crappy jobs just to get by!

My mom paid jack shit in social security, guess what she's getting? Yup, social security benefits.

CRR do I REALLY understand you to mean that you would begrudge your own mother social security???? And people wonder why conservatives have the reputation of being cold-hearted. ***shaking head

Okay, just so that we get the full story- here's the link to the transcript and the full copy of what was said. It is much different than it seemed.

Mary is with us. Mary Mornin. How are you, Mary?

    MS. MORNIN: I'm fine.

THE PRESIDENT: Good. Okay, Mary, tell us about yourself.

MS. MORNIN: Okay, I'm a divorced, single mother with three grown, adult
children. I have one child, Robbie, who is mentally challenged, and I have two
    daughters.

THE PRESIDENT: Fantastic. First of all, you've got the hardest job in
    America, being a single mom.

    MS. MORNIN: Thank you. (Applause.)

THE PRESIDENT: You and I are baby boomers.

MS. MORNIN: Yes, and I am concerned about -- that the system stays the
    same for me.

    THE PRESIDENT: Right.

MS. MORNIN: But I do want to see change and reform for my children because
I realize that we will be in trouble down the road.

THE PRESIDENT: It's an interesting point, and I hear this a lot -- will
the system be the same for me? And the answer is, absolutely. One of the
things we have to continue to clarify to people who have retired or near
retirement -- you fall in the near retirement.

MS. MORNIN: Yes, unfortunately, yes. (Laughter.)

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I don't know. I'm not going to tell your age, but
you're one year younger than me, and I'm just getting started. (Laughter.)

    MS. MORNIN: Okay, okay.

THE PRESIDENT: I feel great, don't you?

    MS. MORNIN: Yes, I do.

THE PRESIDENT: I remember when I turned 50, I used to think 50 was really
old. Now I think it's young, and getting ready to turn 60 here in a couple of
years, and I still feel young. I mean, we are living longer, and people are
working longer, and the truth of the matter is, elderly baby boomers have got
a lot to offer to our society, and we shouldn't think about giving up our
responsibilities in society. (Applause.) Isn't that right?

    MS. MORNIN: That's right.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, but nevertheless, there's a certain comfort to know
that the promises made will be kept by the government.

    MS. MORNIN: Yes.

THE PRESIDENT: And so thank you for asking that. You don't have to worry.

MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I
    contribute.

THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

    MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.

THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that
you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)

MS. MORNIN: Not much. Not much.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, hopefully, this will help you get you sleep to know
that when we talk about Social Security, nothing changes.

    MS. MORNIN: Okay, thank you.

    THE PRESIDENT: That's great.

Badger: Great comment...sums up the entire economy for the most part.

CRR: I respect that you believe the economy is better now than it has been in recent years. Doesnt mean I have to agree with it. Someone else covered it here, but its not the QUANTITY of jobs. Its the QUALITY of jobs. I could go out today and get a job at mcdonalds, walmart, and jack in the box, but that doesnt mean i should HAVE to. No one should have to work 3 jobs. Dont give me the "My dad had to work 3 jobs" crap. What might have worked for him, doesnt work for a single mother. And dont insult peoples' minds just because you were a business major.

    Um, interesting indeed fd.

    Loved this quote:

Social Security in any form is morally irredeemable.

I think what most forget in the US is that SS was brought in as a solution to all the elderly residing in poorhouses. So what's more irredeemable, elderly collecting a crappy SS check or the masses of elderly people ending up homeless?
