I think I'm gonna do away with meat for this time period. Beef, chicken, and pork are gonna be no-no's for me until Easter. Gonna help my body healthwise too.

What are you gonna give up?

I think television, but I'm not sure... Of course, Ash Wednesday is a day of universal abstinence and fasting along with Good Friday (unless you're Eastern Catholic or Orthodox, in which case the fasting is more severe).

Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works.
If you see a poor man, take pity on him.
If you see a friend being honoured, do not envy him.
Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies.

Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice.
Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin.
Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful.
Let the ear fast, by not listening to evil talk and gossip.
Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism.
For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers?
May HE who came to the world to save sinners strengthen us to complete the fast with humility, have mercy on us and save us.

    -St. John Chrysostom

I don't think so either, but I watch far too much TV, so it would be good for me and give me more time for studying, eh .

"This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own." Isaiah 58:6-8

The similarity would be in the fact that back then, they memorized large parts of scripture and transliterated.

Here's another related scripture: And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. (Matthew 9:15, KJV).
