Watching the Simpsons the other day. Grandpa Simpson said that he'd never accept Missouri as ever being a part of the Union. (Actually, he pronounced it Mizzurah)

So what I want to know is, what's wrong with Missouri? Is there some deep and dark secret that English men should know about?

I await a response with baited breath!

lol, I don't know except Missouri ( pronounced mi-sur-ah) was a split state during the civil war. I grew up in St. Louis, MO and didn't leave the state until I was 32.

but hey, what do I know

Missouri is a beautiful place to live, nothing wrong with it :). Nice and quiet where we live. As far as the Missouri / Missourah debacle... I think some people just say Missourah to piss the ones who say Missouri off. I see no other reason!

Missouri is also known as the "Show Me" state. That little factoid has come in handy a few times now. ;)

Along with what Joy says- Missouri had quite a bit of Confederate guerrilla warfare during the Civil War.

Missouri is where Joseph Smith says the Garden of Eden was.

I was born there (and yes 'show me' is the operative word). Joy nailed it. The Simpsons were parodying an old bitterness between northern states and southern states, particularly with Missouri. There were bands of southern sympathizers that attacked perceived northern sympathizers in Kansas and northern Missouri during the 1850s and during the war. But since Missouri didn't secede, no federal retribution was taken after the war so some in the north were bitter.
