I think my KH's doors were locked but opened during the middle song - there were often about 4 people who left - normally with grumbly/tired kids, no-one ever had to ask for it to be unlocked. Very occasionally we'd just stay for the Public Talk (was a compromise to get us to go if we were feeling a little bit unwell or whatever).
In the summer the fire escape doors were always wide open though - you can't open a window when there aren't any or they don't open, lol.
Were the doors locked at your KH, during meetings?

Yes. The first hall I attended was located close to where I grew up, out in the country part of NJ. The doors were locked as SOON as the opening song began. Same thing with the second hall I went to, which was in a rough city I lived in for a couple years. The kh I where I live now actually leaves their doors open. It's in a nice area, though.

Was locking the doors always for security reasons or for letting the brothers and sisters know that you better not arrive late...

I've never been to a hall that locks their doors. But isn't that against most fire codes for a "church"???

I never went to a hall where the doors were locked.
I would be interested in what the Fire Department has to say on the subject, as I would think that would be a safety issue.

They said it was for security reasons, so that we'll be protected blah blah blah, but the area where I grew up was so boring that crime occured every few years, and most of all, no one gave a damn about the jw's! But whenever I walked in late , all the MS would look at me like, "Um hmm, you should've already been here before we opened our
hymnsong books!" -

They locked the doors after the start of the meeting. It started pissing me off, because I was one of those people who were always late. One time, the door was locked and I was really late, they were into the first talk. I banged on the door rather loudly, because tapping was doing nothing. Half because I needed in, half to make a point that I thought it was stupid to lock the door on a public meeting. How would you feel if you wanted to attend the meeting..as a worldly person..and come to find the door locked. I would wonder what was going on in there if they had to lock the door.
The reason they said they locked the door was that there is a State Mental Hospital in the town, and crazy people from all over would happen to come in and cause disturbances.....never seen it though.....
