Why are JW illustrations so bad?

***Why does anyone stay at Bethel***

For the same reason people stay at the LDS Church Headquarters in Salt Lake City, where the world-famous Mormon temple and tabernacle are. They have been duped that some guy had been chosen by god to start a new religion. They then start it by saying they had some kind of epiphany and were given some miraculous information that proved it was from god. The information was so outrageously absurd those who knew nothing about the history and origins of Christian myth bought into it and now pay to keep it functioning. Religion is a very profitable tax exempt business.

The story Valis posted the link to is true. None of the names of the people involved have been changed to try and protect the innocent.

I appreciate what your saying but I do have one teensy point of order - while I won't necessarily defend LDS teachings - there isn't any of the sheer lack of love and seeming fear in the LDS Church heiracrchy as there is described in this story. I have talked with apostles, seventies, area presidents, stake presidents, bishops (I'm working my way down the heirarchy:) from my church and they were very decent fun (often funny)individuals - certainly no fear and bizarrre Bethel type institution. I was a missionary for two years and the nearest I can get to this Bethel type organisation was the missionary training centre and when I was there it was a blast (sneaking around after hours, playing football in the temple car park, constant giggling in the lessons at the US style teaching - apologies I'm a Brit! - and some really cool group bonding - I cried the day we had to say goodbye to each other.) My point is if I'd been in Bethel instead of the LDS MTC I would have rapidly turned around and said 'cya - dont wann bya'.

    Q,

I have known Mormons who were very nice people, just as I have known JW's who were very nice people. I'll have to agree, the Mormons I knew seemed to be happier then the JW's, especially after the second drink. With both religions the emphases seemed to be more of how things appeared then how they actually are. Living double lives seems to be similar in both religions. At least you guys were not told to blow off your worldly friends and family. Don't apologize for being a Brit, we have several of them on the board and we understand their handicaps.

I personally think religion in general is the biggest joke ever played on mankind. But, if yours is what wakes you up in the morning and puts a smile on your face, more power to ya.

    Take care,

    Dave

Qcmbr... a lot depends on whether or not you're in the in-group. I know plenty of JWs who have fond memories like what you describe of Bethel. Friendships and human nature happen despite all the organizational rules.

Also, call me cynical, but social expectations and status can motivate people to put with a lot of a crap. And Bethelites--even ones with the most menial jobs--do get a lot of status in the JW organization.

Not to sound like a dick but I think that people living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones the more I think about it. If you think coming on here bashing witnesses somehow validates your own messed up religious beliefs you really should give your head a shake. Just because we are ex witnesses doesn't mean we think EVERY other religion is nessesarily better. In my opinion its all the same BS, different pile. The Mormons don't hurt people as much as the wits do but they are still totally, unequivocally, catagorically full of shit. Magical underware and all.

    My personal thoughts on this???

Bottom line is no one at Bethel is allowed to think for themself. Therefore they are not allowed to use their own creativity or intuition, therefore they are uninspired and unmotivated. They draw scenes without putting their feelings, emotions or their heart into their art. They are taught to do everything by rote instead. After all they are told not to trust their heart, right?

I just had to laugh at this. Last time I checked though, they were moving away from the illustrations and towards the photographs, even of biblical scenes.

    Leolaia,

Thanks, I appreciate the complement. It was the highlight of the year for me. I always wanted to go to Bethel and do some art for them. I did this one for them but they didn't like it. I don't know why, I thought it was pretty good.
