"Pagan" is the retroactive shadow of "revelation".
Introduce a new "revealed" doctrine and whatever existed before and continues to exist outside becomes instantly "pagan". A trick as old as Josiah's "Reform" and the book of Deuteronomy (at least).

I believe that they vilify everything that is not their own idea to make it harder for people to have anything but them to hang onto.
