Elders Apptd By Holy Spirit? NO, not if you're talking J.W. elders, imo.

Elders are nothing more than just simple human beings like the rest of us, they are not perfect and make mistakes. The org is really making themselves look stupid by professing that they are appointed by the holy spirit, my dad is as close to a saint as possible and has never been an elder, yet there are others that get appointed to be elders only have to step down, lead a double life or get df'd.

The appointments are political, pure and simple. Down and dirty politics just like in the world.

The word elder to me conveys the idea that a person is older, wiser, more experienced and can give you good advice.

One of the elders who DF'd me when I was 25 yoa, was 28 yoa, and I grew up with him in a trailer park. We were both dirt poor, he taught me how to ride a bike fod gawd sakes... he lays tile for a living and was appointed as an elder. So how does he fit the description of someone that is older, wiser, and more experienced and is capable of giving me advice????? There is no way.

I remember when I was a kid there was a big shake up of the elders at my hall, a bunch got demoted including my uncle. From what I could see they were a pretty decent bunch so of course they had to go. The CO replaced them with some real "winners." Being young and not understanding tact I asked my uncle why he had been demoted, and he replied that they said I wasn't qualified to teach. He then went on to say that if he wasn't qualified to teach then brother so and so wasn't even qualified to learn. Even then I laughed my butt off, he wasn't kidding, one of the guys they promoted could barely read, it was painful listening to the guy, dumb as a post, but politically reliable, and no independent thinking if you please.

I was an elder for several years; I was under the mistaken impression that the Watchtower Society ? Governing Body ? wanted spiritual minded brothers who exhibited kindness and forgiveness. Stupid me, they wanted Corporate dummies that went along with the party line. You know, I have been treated much better in the ?real? corporate world than I ever was in the ?loving brother-hood? of the ?spiritual world? of the followers of men, Jehovah?s Witnesses. Berean

The official line was that a man qualified to be an Elder if all that is said at 1 Timothy 3:1-10 was true of him. Since the Bible is inspired by Holy Spirit one could surmise that Holy Spirit had appointed the man. The truth though is many appointed men do not quailify scripturally and are appointed because of their unquestioning obedience to the WTS and also because of the "Good Old Boy" system. All the foregoing IMO.

    Sunspot,

Of course they are appointed by holy spirit. But I have not been able to determine if it is Burbon or Scotch?

You are appointed for one of a few reasons:

    1) There is a need for elders in that congregation so if you are relatively ok and and go out in service regularly you will most likely be appointed

    2) Who you know... i.e. if your dad is an elder

    3) The CO likes you and "simonized" him or paid him off (this is also generally how you get parts on Assemblies)

    Holy Spirit.... yeah right!

If elders are appointed by some "Spirit" it sure as hell ain't "Holy". I know 2 who were child abusers before they were appointed.
