Does God make you better off financially for putting him first?

A friend of mine told me that an elder said to him, "I've noticed that all the elders in the congregation are doing well financially, because they put Jehovah first. They have nice cars and big homes. If you put Jehovah first, he will take care of you financially."

I don't believe God does this kind of thing - otherwise, why are there so many poor elders in developing countries who can't even afford a bicycle to get around?

Yeah, I heard this growing up. The active JW that puts Jah first will be rewarded but, the broke, laid off, living on welfare brothers and sisters are "spirtualy weak." What a crock of s**t!

Just about every one I knew growing up, that is now an active JW, putting Jah 1st is now broke. So go figure. No ambition or education means = no $

Yeah I remember that sort of BS. When my dad was out of work he was often told to pray more or he was poor because he wasn't putting Jehovah first in his life. Truth was he was more spiritual than all of them and it was because of passing up opportunities and always having his nose in a bound volume or insight book studying that meant he couldn't forge a decent career.

Those experiences at the assembly used to really piss me off where a couple would say 'well our car broke down and we didn't have the money to repair it and we needed it to pioneer. So we prayed and you know what the next week an envelope came through the door with £200 in it. We never found out who had sent it but we think it was definitely Jehovah providing for us'. I used to get really mad and say what about brothers in Africa who haven't even got shoes let alone cars! Why doesn't Jehovah give them some of this good fortune.

Truth was it was encouraged to be poor but the rich were always better thought of. Another paradox of life in the JW's.

The WTS is living proof, on a worldwide scale, of how to pit those indoctrined against opposers and thus reaping the rewards.

Hey those brothers in NY put Russell and his teaching first and look how well they are doing! Oh Jehovah, I don't know about him.

Difficult to say. I don't know very many wealthy witnesses, and the wealthy normal people I know are not particularly spiritual, so .

In Gr. 12, I used to go to Catholic Catechism classes on Thurs. nights instead of studying for the bimonthy Friday math test. I ended up with a 95% class average in Math, and 99% on my provincial examination. Before Gr. 12, I never got an A in math (OK once in Gr. 8, and a few times in Gr. 11 b/c I moved into a statistics class - though I went into the hard math in gr. 12).

My family would've never have been able to pay for university, and I was not elgible for student loans. I asked God for help and we inhereted a tonne of money (haven't yet, but we can just ask the lawyer for money for things like school or, because my dad's on disability, some top up of monthly income).

This may just be coincidence, but I see the possibility of God's help being involved. Like it was said in Futurama:

God: "Bender, being God isn't easy. If you do too much, people get dependent on you. And if you do nothing, they lose hope. You have to use a light touch, like a safecracker or a pickpocket."
Bender: "Or a guy who burns down a bar for the insurance money!"
God: "Yes, if you make it look like an electrical thing. When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

Never worked for our family. My family are good dubs, they completely shun me and they're still broke! Ha! If I ever win the lottery they won't be getting any help from me unless they renounce their faith! hg

I wonder if the elders with the nice cars and big homes are working part time and pioneering?.

    Didn't work for me.

I guess if you consider taken care of to mean not living in a homeless shelter and being able to borrow money for food...then yeah, Jah rocks!
