Are JW apologists really that bad?

In recent weeks, we've had a few JW apologists or sympathizers that have created a bit of a stir around these parts. Some of their posts have been inconsiderate of the feelings of others, causing no small amount of understandable outrage on several threads. On other threads, some of them have frequently failed to even read the posts to which they are responding, causing them to make comments that are unrelated to the discussion at hand. For this, the word "troll" has been thrown around a lot.

It is regretful that some have been hurt by a cold-hearted apologist, and I don't mean to minimize that. However, on the whole, I feel that the presence of JW apologists here is a good thing, even if their manners leave something to be desired. There are several reasons for this.

A minor benefit is that the apologist him- or herself may benefit over time from exposure to the array of ideas offered here. As someone pointed out recently, you cannot "un-learn" something. It may take time, but cognitive dissonance will eventually begin working.

However, the major benefit to the presence of the apologist is that he or she unwittingly provides the perfect contrast of JW-think to normal, rational thought. This is especially true when the apologist offers lines that are clearly taken directly from WT literature, because they echo what countless lurkers are thinking automatically as their programmed responses kick in. When an apologist is rude, or intentionally misses the point of someone's thoughtful post, or changes the subject instead of answering a difficult question, countless lurkers observe this. The apologist becomes the best anti-Witness we could ask for.

Additionally, the presence of the apologist itself is a powerful statement for JW lurkers, since it is in defiance of direct orders from Brooklyn. Clearly, in spite of the apologist's claims to the contrary, he or she does not fully believe what he or she preaches.

Therefore, I am happy to see the apologists on the board. In their own strange way, they help show lurkers what the WTS is all about.

Funny sort of world, isn't it? What do you think?

I can certainly see where they are coming from. But I've never really seen an honest hearted apologist who is not self-righteous, but concerned for the spiritual welfare of others (this would make the less annoying).

I guess you would have to define 'apologist'.

It is fantastic to see some of the discussions that have been had. People in both or many camps really going toe to toe in animated debate, some points won, some lost on all sides. People agreeing to disagree, or having to go back and rethink positions. It's great!

People who defend witness beliefs do not bother me at all; when they start hurling insults that get personal against individuals or the entire group because they cannot pursuade us to 'see the light,' I get very irritated.

This is a discussion forum, not a smack down. If people want to come in and just stir up crap for the hell of it, they will have to take what they get; a bruising from people who have done their homework and found the Society wanting...

I've got no problems with them at all. Bring it on. I was one once too.

    Sng- I couldn't agree more!

I have looked back over my own posts since stumbling onto JWD and I'm amazed at how much I've learned and changed in such a short period of time. The only thing I can liken it to was when I learned the "troof". Only this time, I don't have to "swallow", but I can choose to "spit", if I don't like it.

I don't agree with many here, but that's OK. There is actually less friction on this forum than I ever experienced at the hall and certainly more "love". I have also been FORCED to acquiesce on some things because I was flat out wrong (sincere but still wrong) and at least some here weren't dogmatic and they listened, replied and REASONED on a matter or issue. They gave me space and dignity.

I also realized just how much of a "militant Dub" I had been. And I was one of the "good" ones. Gawd help the true @$$holes.

You know Jesus was right... "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free"!

Extremely well put. I would have said the same thing, though much more crudely.

Good point, SNG. The apologists are an integral part of the JWD experience. It's so "encouraging" to compare our new and continually evolving mindsets with the two dimensional JW mentality.
