The former Iraqi governments have not empowered their citizens with the same constitutional rights that are available here in the US, in fact, that is part of the reason we are there...to bring a more democratic system with more protections to their country
Its the US that is locking these people up. I think trying to blame a former and now non-existent government for these detentions is clutching at straws.
There is also a war going on and in the interest of the overall safety of both the civilians and the sodiers fighting there is a certain amount of sacrifice...whether it is a curfew, martial law and temporarily detaining people to identify them and their loyalties.
The war was entirely the choice of the US - it shouldn't have embarked on a half-assed scheme with a half-brained plan.
However, how exactly does detaining innocent women and young children make the US soldiers safe? If anything it puts them at much greater risk because it inflames the undecided.
... but then I don't imagine for one minute that Bush and Rumsfeld are at all interested in peace - they want war, it suits thir agenda.
