America seems to get so wrapped up in legalities and rights that it misses completely what is important. It will hapilly give up the true valuable freedoms and rights that people have faught and died for and then scream blue murder if anyone suggests something actually useful, like limiting the number of weapons in circulation. -- Simon
So true. How ironic that many of those who fight so hard to prevent any restriction whatsoever on their right to bear arms took no issue to the substantial erosion of our civil liberties that has occurred over the last couple of decades. Banning guns is not the answer. They should never have been so easy to get in the first place. Now it's too late. There are too many out there and banning them would only take them out of the hands of the law-abiding citizenry. Sensible restrictions, however, are Constitutionally valid and long overdue. But the restrictions that have become law are a joke. Trying to determine what constitutes an "assault rifle" becomes an exercise in stupidity. Rather than legislating the types of guns that are legal, the focus ought to be on restrictions that keep them out of the hands of criminals and maniacs. Additionally, firearms safety training ought to be a prerequisite, and thorough background checks ought to be performed as well.
