Your Samba is absolutely adorable, Kate! A Sheltie would be my second choice if we got a dog, the Malemute being my first. Living here in snow country it is a lot harder to be taking the pooch for walks. I can't do it, and hubby works a lot of hours---so it would be up to me to figure out what to do!

Not only the walking when it's icy and such, but its way too cold to keep pets outside and not be totally cruel. We can keep our cats indoors all the time and don't have to worry about something happening to them.

I just know you're going to be very happy that you got him!

    hugs,

    Annie

Sunspot I had to google Malemute because I had no idea what one looked like here is what I got:

Yeppers they are good snow dogs! It would make perfect sense to get a dog that is good for the climate you live in.

One draw back to our sheltie whom I call "low-rider" is he picks up all the stuff from our cedar trees it clings to his fur and he brings it into the house. I vacuum almost daily now besides he sheds a lot too. Come summer and he's getting shaved to the skin and I mean it with all that fur it will be really hot for him here in the summer. I bet he's going to look aweful without his beautiful coat of fur or is it hair? LOL

    Kate your pup is adorable.

Here are my 2 beauties, mother Daisy and daughter Misty - 8,5 and 5,5 years old, Siberian Huskies.

Used to have another one as well: an Alaskan Mamamute named Leska. I had to let him go at the 4th January this year. When your dog is a Malamute, he is entitled to be "your best friend"

In fact we are here on Leska's favorite spot - the fishersharbour in Stellendam: he was always allowed to be free here (other spots as well, but here he was able to swim). Daisy & Misty are not allowed to walk free: they won't listen for a minute and it takes hours to get them back.

What I like very much : they don't bark, even when other dogs are barking at them when we are walking along, they look at the miscreant if they are thinking: you are not worthy to our attention..... (most of the time a dachshund)

    Here's the Cassidymeister:

    Sorry these are so big-

In today's snow with his best friend Chance:

    All tired out

Branda- your Siberians are beautiful! I know what you mean about the barking. Our neighbor has a male Sheltie who comes charging out with some big bark and Cassidy just looks at him with this dumb look like "what??"

Purplesofa: Blue looks like such a gentle soul. Great pic !

    Great thread Kate!

A little bit of a story about this Samba dog:

Kate and I had supposedly resolved the issue about "in-house" pets (parakeets excluded, of course ), and I figured that all was well and done.

Then, one day (a Thursday), I come home from work, and she tells me about this dawg, and how cute this dawg is, and how well-trained this dawg is, and on and on and on. LOL

Then she tells me she's bringing him home on Saturday.

So now I'm stuck with this putrid-breathed dawg, who insists on laying around the house, polluting the air, shedding fur all over the place, and whining like a tortured prisoner whenever it's like just 5 minutes past his feeding time.

    Reminds me of Valis.

Brenda your Siberian Huskies Daisy and Misty are beautiful. I've always liked the looks of Huskies but I must admit the size scares me, any big dog scares me. I have great respect for the power these dogs can pack if they feel the need to protect themselves.

xenawarrior, wow I can't believe how big Cassidy has gotten since the last dog thread! The snow looks like fun, aaah..... for a dog......awww he's so cute sleeping so peaceful!

    confused.....OMG I love that pic!

What afraid of a girl on a bike? LOL This girl is afraid of dogs when I'm on a bike! Been chased too many times and bitten to boot! OUCH!

Craigster, Hun you do exaggerate a bit much! He loves Samba and he had the majority vote of weather we got him or not.........sheese men!

Come on any more pets out there in JWD land? I wanna see pictures!

Kate, I think you mixed up the Huskies with the Malamutes. The Huskie is from the same size and weight as your Sheltie around 50 cm high and a weight between 18-24 kg. Mine are both around 25 kg.

I know that a Malamute can reach 55 kg. (one of my acquintance own one that size) but my Leska was a smal specimen: 35 kg.

But both Husky and Malamute are very strong and when they are determined to go in a certain direction (together) it is very difficult to persuade them to go in another direction.
