I would suggest an examination of the parallel of what's happening here in America as it happened in Germany from the period of 1941 to 1945.

Two words: social Darwinism. Read about it sometime.

Wow, thank you for sharing your writing and I have saved it so I can share it with others.

I too would have been eliminated because of my deafness, I'm thankful I am not living in fear for my life, but who knows what the future may bring? As the old saying goes, "Those that forget the past are forever condemned to repeat it.".

I hope I don't get to see a repeat in my lifetime or anyone's lifetime for that matter, at any given future time.

    Yiz,

Glad you liked it and your point of repeating the past is very true indeed.

rwagoner, your right, your right. Yesterday on Dr. Phil's show (a repeat) they had this women on with deformed hands and face and he did a great job in making her feel worthy and helped others to understand her condition and position. Her condition in no way hampers her work or mobility. Her daughter was also present, she also has deformed hands and she is beautiful.

Dr. Phil asked if she had second thoughts in having children knowing she could pass on this defect to her children. This matter was between her and the husband. They decide to have kids. To me, what this women 'passed' on was 'life' to others, her children. When you seriously think of life, I think of how lucky I am to be here. In exchange for my life I will tolerate mankind's idiosyncrasies. This show made me rethink and when I read your side of the story it only reinforced my rethinking.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts rwagoner.

I think that the parallell isn't only here, but it's more of Germany from 1932 to 1945. Quite honestly, I think your drawing a parallell in this particular case is a bit of a stretch. Sure the government is churning out nearly a quarter of a BILLION dollars annually worth of propaganda, but I don't see any of it directed at eliminating the "unfit" as the Germans termed it. This case is a PRIVATE case of a family's dillema. The politicians simply hijack it to try and further their own agendas. I don't see this as any endorsement of any kind of government policy.

If you want parallells to Germany pre-WWII, there are plenty of others to draw from...such as one party taking over a democratically elected government, then passing laws as the majority to make the things that they do "legal". There's the merging of government with big business interests....there's the manipulation of religious groups to inspire political fervor. There's the finding a group to be the scapegoat for the nations perceived problems...there's fomenting almost a manic version of nationalism....I could go on....

My point is that while there are striking parallells, the one you are trying to draw really isn't all that applicable.

I am not sure about how I feel about this particular case. I am torn because I am not sure I trust the husbands motive.

Anyway, a few years back I worked for our county MR/DD school. We had several clients (adults and children) that didn't function as much as Terri Schiavo. They had feeding tubes. Some of these people with PROPER treatment were able to regain some of their abilities. The parents of these people would never dream of removing the feeding tube and letting them starve to death.

The animal shelter doesn't starve unwanted pets. It is against the law to starve a dog to death. Why doesn't this same standard apply to people?

There is NO parrallel between Germany in the 40's and Terry Shiavo.

The people in concentration camps were there against their will.

Terry told 3 people should wouldn't want to be hooked up to machines or tubes. Doctors keep stating this is a form of "life support" whether you are administering oxygen or food, it's still a tube put in during surgery to sustain the life you can't support on your own. I have stated I wouldn't want it, why can't everyone believe her husband and her 2 friends who remember she said she WOULDN'T WANT IT? It's about HER CHOICE, not ours.

Someone can't breathe on their own so they surgically insert a tube to push air into you. Someone can't eat on their own so they surgically insert a tube to push food into you. What is the difference? You can't live without oxygen, you can't live without food.... they are equal forms of life support. In one you die very fast, in the other you die within days to weeks. Either way she is in a vegetative state which she said she WOULDN'T WANT.

Her parents are fighting for their wants, needs, and opinions. Not those of her daughters. Every single judge and court has sided with Terry and dismissed the parents. Doesn't this say anything?

    As for you Randy,

You are here typing, you are handicapped but have use of your brain. I think it's different circumstances, although I sympathize with what you're saying regarding people who would rather be dead than be in your shoes. People talk out of their ass sometimes. That's all. You have to ignore the ignorant.
