Sport: bringing out the worst in JWs (page 2)

I remember when it was frowned upon for a Witness to play sports because it was a "worldy tradition in honor of false gods and competition which honored them". Anyone else remember?

My dad was an excellent athlete. He grew up in a "divided JW mom non jw dad household" so he did track, gymnastics, boxing, etc.

Loved his basketball. Also insisted at any JW get together that no score be kept, as brothers that kind of competitiveness was unnecessary. Occasionally had folks get in his face over this, or over the game. He always very calmly and quietly explained that certain things were'nt going to happen. I never really overheard them, and though he was not a huge guy he was fairly muscular. Brothers that had to have things "explained" usually walked away looking pale and shaky. Never knew why.

BUT this almost ALWAYS worked, surprisingly, noone kept score, and everyone had a good time. I know, what's the point, but it seemed to work. Until I got out more, I thought it's how ALL dub get togethers worked. Whenever I suggested it, the guys looked at me like I had a second head.

Far from the worst, the best jw times I remember were the weekly sunday night basketball games. It was guy time for the jw guys, and they did'nt have to do all the studying etc. I was just a little kid, but I remember the adults lived for it.

For many JW's, being a complete asshole when you play sports seems to be a Conscience Matter?.

Playing sports with dubs sucked ass. Some of the choppiest people I've ever played with.. the biggest babies too.

I remember several years ago they had a football game on sunday after the meeting. I was there, along with my brother and dad. One of the other guys there ended up trying to start a fight with my brother and even used the "F" word. I dont remember if they played touch or tackle, but im thinking it was touch. They were ever bit as competitive as the so called "worldly" high school teams that they preached against playing for. I never was that good in sports and I always viewed playing sports with other JW's as highly hypocritical considering their harsh stance against school sports.

No, but while playing card games--my, it was a f**king bloodbath. I already suck at most of them anyway, and I nearly left crying one time because they were such assholes.

i remember being told to piss off fatty at a recent soccer game cos like thats the worst thing to be called...told him i was fat cos every time i shagged his mother she gave me a biscuit...im not fat but i am funny

One of my biggest regrets was missing out on sports.... I now live vicariously through my kids in sports.

Funny that you should mention that! The last time I played sunday afternoon football one of the elder asses who was QB said "this is getting to rough no rushing the QB" (cheating pu$$y) So then he starts just throwing really short passes and we're not allowed to get close so they are just walking down the field and laughing and insulting us so he throws to his buddie again and I put his reciever in the DIRT this holier than thou prick probrably weighed 180 but 100 of it was fat! I went 210 and about 10 of it was fat... (oh those were the days) and I put him UNDER the DIRT we skided about 25 feet past the line of scrimage going the other way he was grass stains from chin to ankles...

For some reason I never got asked back...
