Before my fade began I checked with several halls in my circuit and even out of state to review how much they sent to the society each month for the WWW. What I found is that most halls weren't contributing enough to even cover the old cost of the magazines for their congregation, much less the books and brochures and tracts. I've had COs mention and discuss this with the BOE during thier visits. Which is why I investigated other congregations, to see if it was local only or commonplace nationally.

Does this mean the society doesn't have cash? No. It just means the friends are voting with their pocketbooks like Blondie's husband says. They're giving the society what they feel the literature is worth.

When I was accounts servant, donations to the worldwide work were usually between $50 and $100 per month - this was for a congregation that consumed around 1,000 magazines per month, plus books, etc. Other accounts servants in the city told me the same thing. As soon as the donation arrangement went in, remittances to the Society dropped around 80-90%.

So, the society started sending letters to the congregations, telling them to cough up donations from their congregation funds, which we joyfully did.

Do congregations still have to "pay" for literature received?

The rank and file may be expected to "donate" when they pick up literature and then ask for "donations" in the ministry, but when the WTS sends boxes of literature to a congregation do they send an invoice with the amount required to be returned to the WTS?

It seems like someone told me one time that the WTS would cut off a congregation from receiving new literature if they did not remit owed monies for past literature sent.

If that's the case then the whole donation arrangement is a crock of shit. Well, it already is, but this would make it more of a scam than it already is.

I was accounts servant is a couple of different areas of the country.

In the midwest the donations were abysmal.... for years... and it still hasn't changed.

In Cali... although much more affluent the donations still weren't anything to brag about... the numbers would dip, dip and dip then WHAM everyone would cough up and repeat it in 6 months.

The Dubs are NOT generous people... even with their own cause. They are for the most part too broke to be... At least the Mormons and Jews know that educated people can be guilted into giving more of their $$$, which they actually have SINCE THEY HAVE EDUCATIONS THAT ALLOW THEM TO HAVE "REAL" JOBS!!!

I just wish they'd be reduced to poverty.... begging for funds.... like they bragged they would never have to do.

What makes me mad is that People like my Family give so much money to them.

Hell they have given them a huge donation to build a New Hall! Like 20 or 30% for the down payment! Well whatever I am not going to give them Sh*T!

While a few congos put the squeeze on the publishers by putting the donation box by the mag/lit counter, most just have the boxes in plain sight. The rank and file view it as "free" now and any monies might go into the Worldwide box but also the box for local expenses. There is little direct connection between publications and money. In some congregations more money goes into the worldwide box and KHs are struggling to pay utilities and mortgages sometimes using that money. In the last couple of years, an announcement appeared in the KM telling congregations not to do that.

I'm wondering if the WTS is having a cash flow problem, property rich but cash poor.

Blondie - I think you are spot on here!

Remember the old 'handbills' that advertised the public talks. On the bottom it said "No collection ever taken" ? Would the organization ever reverse that? The churched realized the need long ago. How would they ever explain having to do that? That would be interesting to see
