    if it wasnt anyones specific birthday...then it must have been a replacement celebration..makes you kinda woder whats the point...i must admit that many is the day that ive sat and wondered about all the times 'pagans' celebrated their birthday and didnt kill anyone...their fellow pagans must have been so disappointed in them

    No, that verse does not apply to birthdays. A little examination of the matter will show this. The verse reads: "And [Job?s] sons went and held a banquet at the house of each one on his own day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and drink with them."

    In the English Bible the word "birthday" appears in Genesis 40:20, where we read of the birthday celebration of the pagan Pharaoh of Egypt. Consulting Strong?s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, one will see that "birthday" is a compound of the two Hebrew words yowm (meaning, a day [as the warm hours], whether literally or figuratively) and hullédeth from yalad (meaning, to bear young). However, in the Hebrew Scriptures the word "day" (yowm) is often used alone, referring simply to some day. This distinction between "day" and "birthday" may be noted in Genesis 40:20, where both expressions appear: "Now on the third day [yowm] it turned out to be Pharaoh?s birthday [literally, ?the day (yowm) of the birth (hullédeth) of Pharaoh?]."

    At Job 1:4 hullédeth does not appear; only yowm is used in the Hebrew text. So it speaks of Job?s sons? doing something "each one on his own day," not ?each one on his own birthday.?

It may have been that at a particular season, such as harvesttime, the seven sons held a family gathering, and as the feasting made the week-long circuit, each son hosted the banquet in his house "on his own day."     However...

    Words mean different things in different constructions; for instance, the expressions "day-to-day," "night and day," "in his day" or "his day will come" call for different acceptations of the word "day".

    In Hebrew too the word yom is used in a lot of more or less fixed expressions, such as debar yom beyomo, lit. "word/ratio of day in its day" = "daily" (Exodus 5:13 etc.). Here in Job 1:4 the real unit of meaning is not the word yom but the phrase beth 'ish yomo, literally "house of man his day", which is defined by the distributive use of 'ish, "man", actually meaning "each one" => "at each one's place on his day" = "at his time" => "in turn". For this special use or 'ish, cf. for instance Genesis 47,20 'ish sadehu = "each one his field", 1 Samuel 25:13 'ish charbo, "each one his sword"; or, with several complements, Genesis 42:35, 'ish çeror kaspo besaqqo, "each one his purse of money in his package". The possessive "his/her/its" is a necessary part of the expression.

    Isolated, "his day" could mean a lot of things: day of birth, day of death, day of judgement, special opportunity, etc. Only the context of Job 3:1 makes clear that the day of Job's birth is meant. This proves absolutely nothing as to the use in 1:4, in a different context and a distinct expression.

    When choosing between a general meaning ("at each one's place on his time") and a more specific one ("at each one's place on his birthday"), the rules of semantics always favour the former: if a general meaning is possible the speaker would have to rule it out in order to actually mean the more specific one.

      • Benevolence.
        Philippians 4:18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.     Yes!, I do accept that job's children were celebrating their birthdays in this scriptue; to explain it any way else would, I believe, IMHO be performing mental cymnastics.

    However I really need to address the problem of WHY job felt the need to offer sacrifices for his children in case they had offended god in their hearts? if he had offered sacrifices for fear they had 'cursed god' on one occasion ...maybe I could reason that maybe that particular party got 'outta hand' but he did it EVERY time they celebrated their day. So, hoe can I show sensible reasoning on this scripture.

    Thank you also for further explaining your point. It does make sense that where the specific is not mentioned that the general meaning should be accepted. I still believe though that the construction of the sentence doesn't preclude the idea of a birthday or some other regular feast (like harvest or something). But, I do understand your point and will think about it some more.

    I have cut/pasted some information from various commentators that I've found that discuss this subject. In discussing this in the future I wouldn't say that this is categorically referring to birthdays but that it is a possibility.

    4. every one his day--namely, the birthday (Job 3:1). Implying the love and harmony of the members of the family, as contrasted with the ruin which soon broke up such a scene of happiness. The sisters are specified, as these feasts were not for revelry, which would be inconsistent with the presence of sisters. These latter were invited by the brothers, though they gave no invitations in return.

    5. when the days of their feasting were gone about--that is, at the end of all the birthdays collectively, when the banquets had gone round through all the families.
    Job . . . sanctified--by offering up as many expiatory burnt offerings as he had sons (Le 1:4). This was done "in the morning" (Ge 22:3; Le 6:12). Jesus also began devotions early (Mr 1:35). The holocaust, or burnt offering, in patriarchal times, was offered (literally, "caused to ascend," referring to the smoke ascending to heaven) by each father of a family officiating as priest in behalf of his household.
    cursed God--The same Hebrew word means to "curse," and to "bless"; G ESENIUS says, the original sense is to "kneel," and thus it came to mean bending the knee in order to invoke either a blessing or a curse. Cursing is a perversion of blessing, as all sin is of goodness. Sin is a degeneracy, not a generation. It is not, however, likely that Job should fear the possibility of his sons cursing God. The sense "bid farewell to," derived from the blessing customary at parting, seems sufficient (Ge 47:10). Thus U MBREIT translates "may have dismissed God from their hearts"; namely, amid the intoxication of pleasure (Pr 20:1). This act illustrates Job's "fear of God" (Job 1:1).

    COFFMAN'S COMMENTARY

    Each one upon his day(Job 1:4). It is not known if this means each one upon his birthday, or if it means that they took turn-about in hosting the feasts according to some other assignment of the days.

    Job. offered burnt offerings(Job 1:5). The revelation of this verse is extensive. (1) It places the scene in the patriarchal age before the giving of the Law, during which the patriarch was the priest for his family. (2) Job recognized that the seat of human sin is in the heart, as Jesus said (Matthew 15:19). (3) It shows that Job recognized that, Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22), and (4) that, Job was mindful of God upon good days as well as evil, and that he faithfully discharged his duty as God's priest within his family.

    JOHN WESLEY'S EXPLANATORY NOTES

    Verse 4

    [4] And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

    Feasted ? To testify and maintain their brotherly love.

    His day ? Each his appointed day, perhaps his birth-day, or the first day of the month.

    Verse 5

    [5] And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

    When ? When each of them had had his turn.

    Satisfied ? He exhorted them to examine their own consciences, to repent of any thing, which had been amiss in their feasting, and compose their minds for employments of a more solemn nature.

    Early ? Thereby shewing his ardent zeal in God's service.

    May be ? His zeal for God's glory, and his true love to his children, made him jealous.

    Cursed ? Not in a gross manner, which it is not probable either that they should do, or that Job should suspect it concerning them, but despised or dishonoured God; for both Hebrew and Greek words signifies cursing, are sometimes used to note only, reviling or setting light by a person.

    Hearts ? By slight and low thoughts of God, or by neglecting to give God the praise for the mercies which they enjoyed.

    Thus ? It was his constant course at the end of every feasting time, to offer a sacrifice for each. Parents should be particular in their addresses to God, for the several branches of their family; praying for each child, according to his particular temper, genius and disposition.

    If the celebration of birthdays is wrong BECAUSE in the scriptural accounts ONE person died at each of two such celebrations, would it not be forbidden to give (wedding) presents???

    (1 Kings 9:16NWT: "(Pharaoh the king of Egypt himself had come up and then captured Ge'zer and burned it with fire, and the Ca'naanites dwelling in the city he had killed. So he gave it as a parting gift to his daughter, the wife of Solomon.)")

    Just when this unidentified Pharaoh had conquered Gezer, which he now gave to his daughter as a farewell wedding gift, or dowry, is not stated

    so its not as if wts explain that scripture any other way
