Do J.W.'s still spank their kids in Kingdom Hall libraries to punish them?

I vaguely recall a C.O. giving a talk that included comments on the relevant scripture. He said that the word translated rod could also mean crook, therefore it wasn't about physically chastising the child but guiding them or rescuing them. Maybe he got that from the WT you're thinking of Listener.

God, I must be bored to be looking up the WT CD! Here's a fairly recent comment on Proverbs 22v15 from the WT.

*** w02 3/1 p. 32 "Now, This May Hurt" ***The rod, in this instance, is a symbol of parental authority. It is true that few children like discipline. If it involves punishment of some sort, they may resent it. However, wise and loving parents look beyond the child?s hurt feelings to the eventual gain

There are one or two more recent references that are completely ambiguous as to what discipline comprises.

WOw, scotsman, that is new light.

Compare it to their past insanity, as collected at http://quotes.watchtower.ca/discipline.htm

"I think we need the woodshed for some young folks."

A spanking may be a lifesaver to a child, for Jehovah says: "Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. If you beat him with the rod you will save his life from Sheol." Again, "Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts."

look to animals for instruction is not to lower our thinking to their level, but to lift it to God's thoughts.....There is no juvenile delinquency in the animal realm, because there are no delinquent animal mothers. They do not spare the paw and spoil the young, but spank to preserve the young...You parents know what you must do. You children know what you must do. Jehovah knows what he will do. If we obey him, he will do things for us. If we disobey him, he will do things to us.

    The literal use of the rod in punishing a child may sometimes be necessary;

Modern parents, in this age of delinquent youngsters, can take a lesson from the mother "teddy bear," the koala. When baby koalas "are really naughty," writes Ivan T. Sanderson in his new book Living Mammals of the World, "the mother turns them over her knee and spanks them on their bottoms for minutes on end with the flat of her hand, during which time their screams are soul-rending."

ist thing is to remember...to spank not with anger..i spanked ALL three of my kids..and they all turned out great...respectfull of other persons..not spoiled or winee....

this notion that spanking is child abuse is WRONG ....thats why we have SO many persons today that think they can do anything they want....

NOW beating a child is TOTALY WRONG..i was BEAT as a child...I was strapped down to a bed and whipped with a belt..now thats wrong

BUT a little SWAT with the bare hand will NOT injure the child.....whenever i had to give my kids a swat......they knew they had three warnings before they got it....and acuatlly...the most likely stopped the bad behaviuor before the third warning came

i also am tottaly agasint spankings at the kingdom hall or out in public...i feel that doing it out in the open WILL humilate the child....donald

We had an elder in our hall...who was generally nice...who had a grand-daughter he would take care of. Every time he conducted the meeting for field service and his kid started to whimper he would spank the living shit out of her while conducting the meeting ....some people didnt need to spank in the library, they did the public displays of violence schtick knowing they could get away with it. It was awkward moments like these that prevented me from going back...

Last Meeting i went to was 2 Years ago and yes some poor little Mite was getting his regular Thursday Night thrashing..he would have been about 5/6 then.If i ever saw that again,i like to think i would say something. Thanks to my own regular beatings back in the 70,s (along with my 2 Brothers)i view even touching a Child in an aggressive manner (smacking, slapping whatever)as a form of Child abuse.

This topic brings back so many bad memories. My dad took me and each of my three siblings to the back of the hall for spankings many and many a time. One memory that stands out is from when I was three or four years old. I wasn't sitting still and my dad picked me up rather roughly and I remember screaming all the way back, "Nooooo, daddy, noooo!"

Why not have Children's Church? Kids usually have a hard time sitting still for ten minutes, let alone two hours. I've personally seen how wonderfully kids do when they have a lesson geared to them, get to interact and do artwork and sing, etc. They retain more information, have a great time and the adults are not disturbed during church. Oh, wait...I remember why the WBTS doesn't institute that....because that would be a LOVING and COMPASSIONATE way to handle things!

Banshee, We have a Children's mass once a month, where all the little kids are invited up to the front of the church during the homily (talk). They all sit on the floor in a semi-circle, and the priest tells them stories relating to the gospel which was just spoken to the parishioners.

We also have a cry room, for the more fidgity children. Plus our Masses are only 45 minutes long.

I don't even know how a grownup can last two hours in church. i couldn't. My wife would be saying, "Wake up, it's time to go home.".

Of course here is what a CO would say: "Friends, children are a precious inheritance from Jehovah! Are we disciplining them with that in view. Do we let our children have coloring books, pens, pencils, drawing paper, stuffed dolls or animals at the meetings?!! Of course not. We're not here for playtime; we're here for spiritual growth. Don't be fooled by the so-called wisdom from Satan's world - kids can sit and listen for a small 2 hour period. Children sit for long periods of time in a car to go on a vacation to somewhere they love; they'll sit for hours watchng tv whether it be movies or a series of 1/2 hour cartoons. Friends, don't be fooled, Satan would love nothing more than for you to have misplaced feelings of guilt and shame and allow your children to play at the meetings, to doodle at the meetings, to daydream! at the meetings! The society doesn't give any ages for such things, but let's be serious for a moment - have you seen a teenager playing a video game at the KH? Of course not! That's because they are developing a spiritual self - for younger children you parents need to do this. If your child is loud or showing disruptive behavior take them to the back and discipline them. Don't let them think the back of the hall is for playing! NO! it's not for playing but for disciplining. Follow the slave's counsel and you will benefit"

    WHAT A LOAD OF ****!!!!!!

Kids cannot sit and listen for 2 hours! ok now lets look at the way education grows! in primary school you start off learning how to spell simple words like hello or happy and there is such thing as a recess or lunch which serves a great purpose because it gives kids a break from work! even teenages and adults need a break every now and then!

In primary school children do things set at their level like drawing or creative things becasue you can learn from doing things like that. Now what do you think will happen if you make a 5 year old do Algebra or Triganometry? They will dodle and go off into fairy land because they havn't a clue what that is! While a teenager can do algebra and Triganometry (if talented at maths! ) because it is set at their level! So think of that in a sence with the kingdom hall! Do you honestly think a 5 year old would understand what the people are on about firstly they will be speaking pass the kids vocabulary so they would say things the child would not understand and secondly children have a short attention span so they would tune out in 5 minutes. I know when I went to church at a yung age i'd tune out and get bored because i don't know what the priest is on about and it was just plain boring sitting there for 45mins staring at the wall!

What my church does is take the kids into a separate room and colour in pictures related to christianity and had discussions on simple things like the fact love is more important than money etc. I found that so much better because I could understand what was going on and it was more fun because I was colouring in pictures etc.

Teenagers are more likely to sit there for 2 hours than children because they are more mature because of age and their higher standard of education.

Kids can sit there for two hours watching t.v because the program is more appealing to them, they understand whats going on and its entertaining. There is a big difference! what would a child prefer watching colourful pictures from the tv or sitting in a dull Kingdom hall! Also sitting in a car has its differences, the child understands what is going on, they can look out the window at the countryside as they are travelling from town to town. Children in cars often fall asleep and also car travelling can have its downs as well, you often have the kids get restless and chant "are we there yet?"

Small 2 hour period? did it say SMALL 2 hour period!?! I think SMALL is an UNDERSTATEMENT!!!!!!!

If i was there at the kingdom hall and heard a speaker say that! BOY WOULD I STAND UP AND GIVE HIM MY WORTH!

Disipline really isn't necessary if anyone the watchtower is the one that deserves the spanking!

    Evanescence!
