Political affiliation after leaving org.

How long did it take you to decide if you were a liberal or conservative after leaving the organization? I find it interesting that even though it took me a number of years to get up the courage to vote, I knew right away I was politically/socially liberal. I knew that I had strong feelings about protecting the environment, about civil rights, free speech, etc. Other things like abortion and the death penalty have required more thought, as has becoming educated about the whole political process, but it still seems strange that having spent my life in such a conservative organization being pounded over the head with the need to remain "politically neutral", my political and social leanings seemed to be even more an inherent part of me than the lifetime of witness brainwashing.

I'm curious about others' experiences, especially those who were raised as witnesses. Did you know right away where you stood politically and socially? Or did it take awhile to figure things out?

I knew early on how I thought.

I would consider myself a moderate conservative, though I hate labeling.

I used to be uber conservative and thought Drug Limbaugh was right on.

After spending as much time as I have around less fortunate I'm a strong Democrat now. It's ok to be conservative when you are young since you haven't had many set backs financially .... but to be a Republican after age 30 or 35 is plain crazy and heartless.

Financial setbacks at this time of life is SPECIFICALLY why I'm a conservative. A quarter of my income went to "those of less fortunes" than me, even though I was only making 10$ an hour and worked 20 hours a week.

Then, when my dad died, we had to pay a death tax, an estate tax and other taxes. I was taxed on my share of the life insurance, all to pay for these governmental boondoggle programs.

In my feild that I'm studying, I'm going to have to move to another state if I want to practice my profession.

I simply cannot afford to pay the taxes here if I start a business. So don't tell me how giving my money to government programs somehow helps poor and less fortunate people. I'm a poor and less fortunate person and I may stay that way because of these stupid do nothing programs.

Well you didn't pay 25% of your money to less fortunate...those taxes are for you my friend. Social security...roads... schools - including college loans and grants... your boondoggle army in Iraq.

Death taxes are ONLY on estates larger than $2,000,000 and on it's way to $ 5,000,000.

If you are poor then maybe you should take advantage of some of those programs.

There is more to politics then just Liberals and Conservatives. After leaving Jehovah's Witnesses I voted Democrat until I discovered the Libertarian Party.

Libertarians are the heirs of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Libertarian Party shares the same basic values that the Democratic Party had before the populism of William Jennings Bryan and big government nanny statism of Franklyn Roosevelt.

Grover Cleveland is the last Democratic president that I admire. Calvin Coolidge is the last Republican president I admire.
