I was talking to my grown ex JW daughter the other day and we were discussing the new Cathedral downtown. The old one is still there but small.

I was telling her that the hebrew letters for "Jehovah's name" is inscribed on the top of the cathedral. The YHWH in hebrew letters..
She barked back saying" Are you trying to say the JW's are right?

I was shocked! I never knew she had issues about that subject after all these years. I wonder if she still feels they might be?
I explained to her that the JW's had added their own vowels to their advantage to pronounce God's name and promote their religion.

But when I first became a JW and saw that on the church..I was convinced they (JWs) knew god's name and the JW's were the only "Right" religion. After all..as far as I knew the JW's were the only ones that used God's name.Right?Or so they taught us.The Catholics didn't use it..but they knew it according to that inscription.
I don't know what point I am trying to make of this..just how easily I was led astray..Of course today I realize how young and impressionable I was. But I was really surprised at my daughter's reaction. It took me by surprise. She it totally Catholic now.

    Snoozy..

Funny story. My parents are active JW's and every time I point out the reasons why I DA'd myself I always get great reactions. My mom is such a drama queen. She gives me that "WHAT?" all the time. Just figured I would share.

Actually, the Catholic New Jerusalem translation of the Bible has the name "Yahweh" in it thousands of times (if memory serves).

Are you saying that JW's invented the word Jehovah? The Catholics invented the word not the JW's.

JW's are certainly not the only ones to use the name Jehovah or YHWH.

I've been listening to a Christian radio station, and watch various programs on TV and was really shocked the first time I heard a pastor say the name Jehovah. I can't believe how much other religions actually use the name. I think JW's have their heads stuck in the sand when it comes to other religions and what they do.

Not that I am a scholar of any type, but the King James version of the bible contains the name "Jehovah" and always has, to my knowledge. Many bible translations contain the name Jehovah so I never understood why this was made a big deal.

These other versions don't use Jehovah in the New Testament (as seems to be the generally accepted truth ...even the JWs admit it.) nor quite as much as the NWT but it is not a name wholly unrecognized or unused by other religious denominations.

    Just my thoughts,

Even denominations that regularly use only the KJV with it's two occurances of the name, tend to prefer Jehovah over Yahweh. What most people miss is that the Metrical version of the Psalms (for singing) contain the name in MANY more places.

    Interesting reaction, though.

My sister reacted in a positive way, when she heard it used several times in a church, as it vindicated the fact that the JWs aren't the only ones to use it.

The main Protestant (mostly used by evangelicals) Spanish and Portuguese Bibles (Reina-Valera and Ferreira de Almeida) use Je(h)ová throughout the OT. After some discussion it was maintained in the 1995 R-V revision because it was popular, especially in Latin America.

The first recorded use of the name "Jehovah" occurs circa 1278 in Latin in Pugio Fidei (Dagger of Faith). It was given to us by a Roman Catholic Spanish monk of the Dominican Order by the name of Raymundus Martini (Raymond Martin). It found it's way into the English King James Version in 1611. However, Catholic scholars of our day prefer the Jewish name Yahweh. This proves that Jehovah's Witnesses didn't give the name "Jehovah" to the world. Moreover, they don't have a monoply on the name as other groups use it as well.

Ever hear about the "Sacred Name Movement"?

Other Millerite offshoots are also preoccupied with the Name.
