I agree Talesin... poverty is no joke...and doesnt make you less of a person, nor does it mean you don't have class, in fact i find that people who have experienced the "have and have nots" tend to have more common sense and that trumps so called "class"

I have recvd free condoms, i don't see anything wrong with it. If the Government wants to give me something and i qualify for it...I'm going to take it. I have to pay around 7,000 in taxes for last year...

    the_classicist,

Please copy your posts and save them on disc, so you can have a chuckle over them a few years hence, when you come down to earth and realize you are lucky to have been born in Canada.

Well, it is a bit extreme, but if you have to go to the Downtown Eastside as much as I do, you'd get pretty fed up with all the drug addicts and dealers while the police stand around doing nothing. And these drug addicts and dealers don't just keep to themselves, they try their hardest to make life hell for the rest of us.

    talesin,

Sad, but true. Unfortunately, my ex and I did live in poverty due to illness, so 10 bux a week for condoms was a big expense, as pathetic as that sounds.

I hope that your ex was just as willing to line up for free condoms and that he did not expect you to have exclusive rights to this job?

You pay $7,000 a year tax *and* qualify for free condoms.

There is nothing wrong with being poor, if of course it is not due to indolence, but frankly there is nothing very noble about it either - it certainly does not make you 'more' of a person either. When the rich help the poor to help themselves, now that is noble. Throwing cash at symptoms invariably fails to deal with the disease.

I am puzzled why 'common-sense' and 'class' should be competing for anything as your thread presupposes. I am not sure that one has anything to do with the other.

    Eric,

Additionally, the Victoria needle exchange is surrounded by thriving busineses, including the highly tourist oriented Gate of Chinatown.

You mean those twelve Chinese stores on that fifty yard stretch of road is a Chinatown? In San Francisco, there are Chinese resteraunts with a larger floor area than Victoria's Chinatown.

H_S, errrmm,,, no, he was always too tired. I wonder why? hmmm ...

    j/k lol

For informational purposes, this is how it works.

Oops, there's no lineups. It's an office on the street level. You walk into a big reception area. There are chairs, some folks sitting around, chatting, and a coffee pot. A counter at one side, with the office part behind it. Someone behind the counter will greet you as you walk in. You walk up to the counter, and just take your condoms out of the jar. I don't know how the needle exchange part works, no one was ever exchanging when I was there.

Volunteering at the the homeless teen shelter, and the AIDS Coalition (more free condoms tee hee), taught me a lot about the poor and the addicted. It helped me to realize there are reasons for poverty, and victim-blaming only serves to assuage the guilt of those who are more well-heeled. Very few people are truly indolent, they are usually disenfranchised, mentally ill, uneducated, etc.

When rich folks give, it is a good thing, yes. But most of them made their money on the backs of the poor anyway. Ted Turner made quite a gesture in giving away 1/4 of his fortune -- it's too bad he gave it to the UN, and didn't set up his own foundation. Fact of the matter is, the richest "citizens" are the corporations, and they are as we know, sociopathic in nature, and have no intrinsic value on a human level.

I understand how you feel. You seem to be really negative about our country, and gosh, we have it so good here. Why not work to change the things you really don't like?

It sounds goody-two-shoes, yes, but we are no longer JWs, we are now part of the world. We no longer believe Harm-a-geddon is gonna destroy it, and we live in the current system. It is our world, and only we can make it better.

There is an old joke. We are Canadians, we don't start wars, we write letters!! So, write a few letters of protest to your MP, your Mayor, or whoever, about whatever pisses you off. It will help to relieve some of the frustration you are feeling about things, and believe it or not --- they read them! One letter to the right politician is worth a million comments on a discussion board.

just home from a long long day, i was only able to read one post,,,,this needle exchange is not one where sober people chat and have coffee,,,,these are working girls who want to get needles so as not to get aids,,,,dont even ask me about that oxymoron,,,,,,,,,,,this is a senior residential , mostly, area

very long story short and will post more after reading all through, i am also going to get so very politically involved, as i DO believe in needle exchanges,,,,,,,,(get to do a raspberry here lol)

so if it is funding, i have already in one day , plus working at my shop, got 1000 signatures, and names of people on both sides to work with

to get funding to move to where it should be for them, and to get street nurses here, i believe in all those things

so nuff said, i am spining with names, ideas, and support from both sides, so here goes, time to have a cooler and chill

    :)
