We went through Amarillo a few years ago on our way to Colorado, and I absolutely loved the area, and I have wanted to go back ever since. Just outside of town heading north towards Dalhart the lanscape starts to take on the feel of the old west. There are canyons, mesas, and buttes. I just thought it was a neat area to drive through, even though most of the panhandle seems to be flat plains. I have been toying with the idea of going back to Texas again later this summer and once again visiting the Amarillo area. Amanda wont be able to go on this trip, and she's not much into the desert landscapes anyway. There are several things I want to do in Amarillo. I want to see the Palo Duro Canyon, The Big Texan steakhouse, the caprock canyons, maybe do one of those chuckwagon dinners. I checked into motel rates there and they are very reasonable. I just cant decide if I want to go there or back to Dallas for a visit. I believe Shutterbug lives near Amarillo. Does anyone else live in this region?

We used to live there. Palo Duro Canyon is good to do, also the Big Texan. Can't remember which way out of town it is - but one of the local millionaire's has put up the Cadillac Ranch - where he planted some olde caddys with the tail-ends in the air - it is kind of a monument out there. Can't remember his name right off the top of my head.

It is different type of landscape, but if u live there it tires quickly. What I enjoyed was the dry-crisp night air there. We were in 'the truth' when we were there, so we never did much in the way of entertainment, but seems like there was some western music clubs in the area. But being in tennessee you have all that.

Personally I would rather visit your home state - I do love Tennessee! Let us know how it goes - and if you meet up with any nice 'apostates' out there PM me - I might know them - have never kept touch.

Thanks Jeff, I just love getting away and seeing new places. I love the dryness out there and bet they dont get a fraction of the rain that we do here.

Thanks Bill, Im just not sure if im coming there or Dallas again this summer. I already have tons of brochures from Texas and especially the panhandle too. I love the panhandle but Dallas is so cool also, plus my brother wants me to come and stay with him while he's there on business.

Another thing, the first full weekend in August there is an XIT ranch reunion in Dalhart Texas. The Xit Ranch was the largest ranch in the world and measured 27 miles wide by 200 miles long. They host several rodeos that weekend and have a free BBQ. I would love to go and see that too. Texas is such a big state. So much to do with so little time and money. I cant do it all, so I need to make up my mind shortly so I can plan it.

When the day is dawning on a Texas Sunday morning
how I long to be there
with Marie who's waiting for me there
every lonely city where I hang my hat
ain't as half as pretty as where my baby's at

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarilloand sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
    crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala and Marie who waits for me

    There's a church bell ringing
hear the song of joy that it's singing
for the sweet Mariaand the guy who's coming to see her
just beyong the highway, there's an open plain
and it keeps me going through the wind and rain

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarilloand sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
    crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala and Marie who waits for me

Sorry, had to post it before anyone else did
