Just booked my holiday up on the net, Off to the beautiful greek island of Kefalonia July 3rd. But I still can't get my head round flying, I sweat, panic, near on hyperventilate throughout the whole flight. To me its just not normal that a 300 ton lump of metal can get off the ground like that. I HATE FLYING. it scares the shit out of me. I'd never let it stop me going to my beloved Greece, but it never gets easier.

Please remind me again of why I'm so safe up there hurtling forwards at 500mph in a metal tube, full of combustible fuel and weighing 300ton etc etc and that all is well...........

I would suggest you see your doctor and get a prescription of valium or Xanax. And it's actually more like 530 mph...LOL.

It's safer than driving by a long shot. You are more likely to get killed driving to the airport to catch your plane than actually on your plane.

If that doesn't work...just picture me naked and think naughty thoughts..... bwahhhh haaaaaa haaaaa.

Scooby, it's all about the airfoil of the wing.

The curved top of the wing causes an area of lower pressure above the wing, with the area under the wing being flat leaves the air pressure well enough alone. The lower air pressure above the wing than below the wing sucks the wing (and the plane) up into the air.

Thousands of people fly every day. It's safe as can be. Maybe you could buy some fun flight simulator software and learn to fly on your computer. It's easy, and really does help (I should know, I was scared to fly at first too, now I am planning on taking flying lessons ;))

"In 2000, the world's commercial jet airlines carried approximately 1.09 billion people on 18 million flights, while suffering only 20 fatal accidents ... with 878 fatalities". So 20 out of 18,000,000 flights had fatal accidents, and 878 out of 1,090,000,000 passengers died.

    See especially:

Cheers FMZ........I'll have a look into that in the next 5 weeks before I go, although I'm not sure being "sucked up into the air" is still natural or normal.
