I wasnt sure what catagory to put this in but here goes,

Im trying to lose weight, unsuccessfully. Does anyone know the % of the foods you should eat to be healthy. I mean how much protein, carbs, veg should you eatin your diet. IS it eg 40% protein 30% carbs

Ive tried cutting out bread and cutting down on carbs, that hasnt worked, Ive cut out alcohol and am cycling 30 minutes 3 times a week plus walking the dog.

Im desperate, Ive thought about just eating fruit during the day and buying weight watcher ready meals for the evening meals, but I could be just making it worse My husband has taken away my scales cos I was weighting myself everyday( well 3 times a day) but I can tell by my clothes ive not lost a lb

Has anyone any ideas ? someone mentioned a site "fitday" its free to join so I know im not eating too much. I started at 1500 cals a day, nothing, so went down to 1200, last three days 1000.!!!!

    Thanks

I think the secret is - eat small meals a few times a day, and WALK WALK WALK WALK WALK WALK WALK WALK

My sister started walking and over time she lost all her excess weight.

    Good luck!

After decades of worrying about weight (and yes, I was quite heavy at one time), I was forced to change my diet for health reasons. Trust me, when you are forced to eat healthy, you will lose weight. Here's a quick summary of what my diet (not a lose-weight diet, but a stay-fit-for-life diet) comprises,,,

    no processed / packaged foods

no grains (okay, so cut out all white foods, eat only whole grain breads, brown rice, etc.)

lots of healthy carbs ,,,, veggies, fruits, nuts

eat flesh protein sparingly,,, ie, small portions (think fist-size) and eat more beans/lentils

Every time you eat a package food (don't care if it's weight watcher or what), it is loaded with chemicals, and preservatives.

Preservatives --- just think about it ... what is making you retain fluid .... how is your poor gut processing all these chemicals ....

Also, eat coloured food ,,, mangoes (enzymes in this fruit will help digestion), broccoli and kale and all dark greens (iron), blueberries (cheap, organic in the frozen food section).

in two years, i had lost 70 pounds ... not trying to lose, but eating healthy, spending my Sundays cooking and freezing meals for the week

    ... some thoughts

Oh, yes, and walk, walk, walk ... stretch when you get up in the morning, and always 'break your fast' , put some carbs and protein in your breakfast,,, the carbs will get you going, and the protein will sustain you. Snack often, get to know your body and it's rhythms ,,,, let yourself eat when you wish. Enjoy your food!

xo and good luck w/ it!

Excercise and a lot of water!

Also, have you ever had your thyroid checked? Sometimes that can be a reason for not losing and yet doing everything right!

I know I myself am going to try to get on a program next week myself.. just trying to get over the remnants of my cold before i kick it in to gear.

Vitty, I've been reading a lot lately about how if we cut down too much on the calorie intake, our bodies 'thinks' it's involved in a famine. so therefore it will conserve whatever extra we have ,for the hard times so to speak. Sorta goes back to when we we're' hunters and gatherers'. the metabalism slows down instinctively.

If we eat the daily requirments from the food pyramid it's suppose to help us maintain the balance, It's due to be up-dated soon if it hasn't already been. It used to be the "basic four" food groups.

My daughter lost a hundred pounds in a years time, she measured everything. never left home with out a snack. And stuck to the daily requirments, faithfully. Excercised five to six days a week. Or the popular walking. She gave up Soda, and started drinking more milk, eating more dairy foods. And as has been said drinks lots of water.

    • 6-11 servings of grain
    • 3-5 servings of vegetables ..... , especially green, leafy vegetables;
    • 2-3 servings of fruits
    • 2-3 servings of meat fish, seafood, and poultry
    • 2-3 servings of dairy ,cheese,yogurt.
    • sparing use of fats, oils and sweets.

Hope you the very best in whatever you do. And good health to you.

Talesin's diet is very much like mine and that works for me, but we are all different.

Be patient. Diets do take time to work. Being too skinny ain't much fun either. I know, I've been there.

Low carb works for many people, but not all. Don't take on a diet that is too hard to keep to, that just ends up with the yo-yo effect that makes things even tougher.

I need a diet that maintains my weight without feeling like I am on a diet. Low carb does it for me and I am able to treat it as a lifestyle rather than a diet. I eat a lot of saturated fat and have got over the ticker problems that I was having on a low fat diet. I don't go along with the anti-saturated fat cult, I like my food close to the way nature provided it.

Research shows that fit, fat people have a better life expectancy than unfit skinnies too, but that stuff doesn't make the headlines in your local rag as it isn't politially correct.

There are more cults out there than just the religious ones and many of them are diet related and are supported by self professed experts who only quote research that support their preconceived notions.

My conclusion, so far, is that fitness is more imortant than weight or wasteline.

    .....and curves are sexy

Cut down on the bread, tatties and sugar and go for a walk. See how it goes. If it doesn't work for you, tell us about it.

Another tip Vitty, and this is a really fun one.

Join your local Rock & Roll club or take ballroom dancing lessons.

It took my wife years of pleading to get me to do that, but it really did wonders for our fitness and the shape of our butts, ( not to mention other pastimes)

    You've gotten some good suggestions.

Don't go too low on calories either; you need to be nourished to loose weight. 1200 is probably the lowest you should go, and on some days add calories to that.

I've got another 15 pounds or so I want to loose and it's going s l o o o w. I'm trying not to focus on the numbers but on eating right and exercising regularly, 50 - 60 minutes five to six days a week. I'll admit I'm getting tired of it and thinking about just letting it be for now.

You might try the library and look at books on different programs. I've pulled my information from a variety of places; I don't think anyone has the answer.

    Good luck!

    Emma
