Elder Criticizes Going To Get Together If A Worldly Person Is There!

My mom told me that an elder said in his Public Talk on Sunday that we need to stay separate from the "world". Evidently, the buzz is that there was a part being given by an unbelieving husband that has been recently attending meetings with his wife. The issue was not that this man invited most of the congregation and they went (including the elder and his family) but that one fellow unbelieving husband who is being studied with did NOT get invited because HE was "worldly and still smokes". The elder made an issue over the fact that it was good that he was not included because he didn't belong there. The word is a number of people are pissed that the uninvited man and his Witness family were hurt........

I saw someone counseled for bringing a non-JW relative to a JW picnic. The elders used this info to counsel them. (Of course, the week before, the non-JW husband of a sister was at a picnic without any problem; hubbie was good friends/business partner of 2 elders; he still smoked and went to the Catholic Church every Sunday).

One cannot walk with God while running in association with those of the wicked and sick society that approves of everything that God abhors. The Bible warns: "Bad associations spoil useful habits." (1 Cor. 15:33) Some in the congregation may be inclined to invite worldly acquaintances and unbelieving relatives who have no interest in the truth to social gatherings, thinking that this will encourage them to accept the truth. However, is this wise and in harmony with the Scriptures?

We have been counseled to be cautious in our dealings with men of the nations, unbelievers, and ordinary persons. (See the November 15, 1988, issue of The Watchtower, pages 15-16.) Why should we have unnecessary social contact with people who still pursue worldly ways and who have not become worshipers of Jehovah? (2 Cor. 6:14, 15) Some who are negligent spiritually may seek out others who also hold on to worldly thinking and ways instead of seeking association with mature Christians who could help them become strong in the faith. They fail to appreciate that attendance at social gatherings with worldly, unprincipled people can weaken their faith and corrupt them.—Compare 2 Thessalonians 3:14, 15.

    What hypocrites!

But Blondie, there was an article in the WT. a few years ago that said the unbelieving mate SHOULD be talked to and befriended and associated with. Do you remember that one? All of the congregation was buzzing on that one.

Welsh and Elthea still recall the many favorable comments of unbelieving relatives who attended their wedding. Said one: "We are tired of the noisy weddings that take place these days. It was so nice to attend a decent wedding for a change."

I guess JW weddings aren't as wholesome and upbuilding anymore.

WTS doublespeak again. They are very good at speaking out of both sides of their mouth. I remember when that article came out and pointed out the principle it engendered to those same elders. All they said was that only the elders could do it because they were stronger spiritually that the brothers and sisters and would not be corrupted.

Elders and ministerial servants can sometimes help by getting to know the unbelieving husband on a social level. In this way he may see that Witnesses are normal, decent people with a wide range of interests, including subjects other than the Bible. In one case, an elder took an interest in a husband’s fishing hobby. It was enough to break the ice. That husband eventually became a baptized brother. In another case, an unbelieving husband was fascinated by canaries. The elders were not defeated. One of them studied the subject so that the next time he met the man, he could open a conversation on that husband’s pet subject! Being holy, therefore, does not mean being straitlaced or having a one-track mind.—1 Corinthians 9:20-23.

Furthermore, a discreet mother in a divided home can give much encouragement to her children spiritually by inviting other Witness friends of the family to visit, with a view to helping those who are unbelieving.

Encourage publishers to tell elders if unbelieving family members are ill for an extended period or are in the hospital; they might be encouraged by a show of kindly interest on the part of some in congregation.
