Can't we get enough of any amino acid by eating good nutritious food do we really need amino acid supplements, and is there any evidence that they really help?

I have the impression that the health food industry is tricking people into buying these.

As for cinammon it may (or may not?) contain an as yet undiscovered anti viral substance. Most medicines come from plant sources.

This is a quite extraordinary claim. The cure to the common cold that has eluded medicine for millennia is finally revealed - by you. I've never heard this claim before and can find little or nothing about it online. Please elaborate on exactly how cinnamon can kill a virus. Does it kill all viruses or just some or all of the 200 or so strains of the cold virus? I would urge you to provide any evidence you have, as if this is true it's sure to earn you a Nobel prize and the gratitude of the entire world.

On second thought, FD....please, don't take the cinnamon, whatever else you do.

Rebel8, I grew up having home remedies used on me cause my Momma was po'....and I raised 3 kids by myself and was too po' to pay for doc visit and for prescriptions, so I tried and used whatever worked on many, many health problems that came up with my kids.

Some of these remedies, like the ones mentioned in this post were actually passed on to me by doctors.

It may be, Greendawn, that under today's living conditions and with today's environment, our bodies are forced to utilize the amino acids that we eat in our foods in ways that undermine their efficacy in needed areas.

The cinnamon and L-Cystiene treatments were given to me by two different doctors.....30 yrs apart.

As someone who works at a supplement retailer, there are two kind of people that I have little patience for: Those who want you to tell them what to do and those who are not open to input at all, automatically assuming it's all about money. Both of these reflect a person who does not take responsibility for their own health by doing research for themselves, being completely absorbed by their view of the industry. My job is to provide general information. If I was a scientist, I wouldn't be working at the store. It really doesn't matter to me what people do, and I don't work on commission or anything like that.

All I can say is going to either extreme in a position of for or against supplements reflects an ignorance which may influence your health. In a way it is like toxicity and deficiency of certain nutrients. You can be so into supplements that you overdose, both in what you take and your view of them, or you can have an attitude of complete avoidance and end up with a deficiency, both nutritionally and in your knowledge of them. These days I keep it pretty simple. I'm less interested in talking about it than I am in practical application, both for myself and others. At work it basically comes down to whether people are willing to give the product a try. I provide whatever information I can for people, I just want them to make their own decision either way and get out of the store so we can both get on with what we need to do.

So, two caps of cinnamon cures a cold? Or, do you have to take them for a few days?

I flung cinnamon onto a couple of JW's at my door this morning, and they ran screaming "my eyes, my eyes!!!". Once the got down the street, I'm pretty sure I saw them shrivel too; so maybe it does kill viruses, Derek.
