Woodworking anyone?

Does anyone dabble in woodworking here? I was raised around it my whole life but never took to it as a trade. My grandfather was a carpenter and my dad is a master carpenter as well. I've inhaled enough sawdust over my life that I think something happened recently.

My wife and I landscaped part of our backyard. We talked about buying some adirondack chairs to put back there on the peastone. I looked around a bit and noticed a disturbing trend. Adirondack chairs are not cheap! At least the nice, well-built ones. So I got a bug up my butt to build a set. My wife thought I was crazy seeing that I have never built anything before from wood.(well I used to do some construction-type woodworking when I was a teenager, but not much).

After I finished the first chair, I decided to nix the other chair and build an adirondack-style chaise lounge(currently in progress - waiting for the weather to cool down). This chair will be unique in that I am attempting to design something that has never been done before with this type of lounger. I don't want to give it away just yet, but I will post the pics when I am done. Hopefully it will turn out how I imagine and will be completely functional. Functional is the KEY word here.

BTW, both of these chairs were created in my head. I just borrowed designs I liked from other chairs and put them together how I wanted it to look. My wife now says she'll think about keeping me around seeing that I'm so handy. But on the other hand, she is already coming up with other projects that she wants me to build. Oooooga

Here is the first completed chair:

I took a woodworking shop class in HS too. I don't know about yours, but mine was absolutely horrible. The best part of that class was getting to use the lathe. Someday I will get a big one....along with a bandsaw and all the other goodies that you need to turn wood.

    Nice Chairs.

That type of furniture was built- by- eye for years.... Wood or metal, the rule is measure twice --cut once.

i used to be very into woodwork when in school and later as a teenager... this is one coffee table i made, which is still in daily use my parents house 10 years later.

the legs are hand turned ash. the oval shape is a handmade plywood, which i had to make by glueing the individual ply's together into that shape, the outer ply i veneered in american black wallnut, real wood veneer... the chessboard is also veneered in ash and american black walnut, i had to cut that all by hand... the bottom of the tabletop is veneered in ash, and the plugs holding the tabletop on are made from ash... the string had to be cut in with a router and pushed in by hand, to seperate the grain in the centre of the table from the grain on the edge... the table also has a glass top, but that's not shown in the photos... edited to add, sorry i got carried away down memory lane... your chair looks great, i dig the design.

LOL. The thing is, I have no desire to build another one that looks just like it. I just want to design and build items that are unique and one of a kind - not some cookie cutter line.

I can't wait to finish my lounger. You'll see what I mean by it being unique. In fact, I am planning on putting up a "reward" of something like $20(payable through Paypal of course) for anyone that can find a similar idea to the one I am incorporating into the chair. I searched high and low for the same idea and couldn't find it anywhere, so I think I'm good to go.

I work in a huge wood shop. Well not "in" the shop but in the office. I design furniture & millwork for casinos, high end retail stores, resturants, hotels and condo's. I'm very knowledgable about woodworking, but I've never got my hands dirty and actually built anything I've designed. Thats what the shop guys are for. hehe.
